Parque Urbano de Santiago

The Parque Urbano de Santiago runs along one side of Avenida Cidade de Salamanca, beside the river Pavia, at the foot of Viseu. The council’s tourism site, Visit Viseu, calls it a place for families to walk or cycle, either along the riverbank or through the middle of the park, with the historic centre on the horizon above.

The park was rebuilt, enlarged and re-equipped in 2017, and the council’s municipal magazine that August described it as a new 8-hectare family leisure area, according to the places guide vadi.agem, which summarises that magazine. Entry is free, and it’s open ground rather than a gated playground.

According to the 2017 municipal magazine, as summarised by vadi.agem, the rebuilt park has:

• a children’s playground (parque infantil) and other play equipment
• basketball courts
• a chess area
• a pedestrian footbridge over the river Pavia at one end
• a viewpoint with the word VISEU in large letters, looking over the city
• a bar-café with a terrace and a view of the city

Visit Viseu adds a sports area with outdoor fitness machines and a circuit designed both for exercise and for testing your fitness, and says the council’s Manhãs Desportivas (sports mornings) take place here.

The council hasn’t published a list of the playground’s equipment, age zones, fencing or surface, so check it on arrival if you’re bringing a toddler who likes to bolt. The long paths are the other draw: a child on a balance bike, a scooter or a first pedal bike has room to ride without traffic.

In 2026 the council and Viseu’s child protection commission (CPCJ Viseu) chose this park to mark the Dia Internacional do Brincar, the UN’s International Day of Play, on Thursday 11 June. Mornings (10:00 to 12:00) were aimed mainly at school groups, and from 17:00 to 19:30 it was open to everyone.

The 2026 programme was free and included horse riding, basketball, volleyball, karate, tennis, teqball, dance and chess, set up as stations children could move between. There were obstacle courses, cycle circuits and a road-safety track, a police-dog demonstration, traditional games and a “free play” woodland area. The council says the aim is free play, outdoors, without adults directing it. The UN only proclaimed the day in 2024, so it’s too early to call it a fixture. If it runs again, look for the announcement on the council’s news page in early June.

• The park is on the lower side of the city, so walking up to the old town afterwards is a climb. Children who are tired from the playground may need a buggy or a car for that part.
• It’s a big, open park, so it’s easy to lose sight of a fast child on a scooter. Agree a meeting point, such as the footbridge or the playground.
• In summer, go early or late. Viseu gets hot, and the lawns and paths are more pleasant out of the midday sun.
• There’s no published information on toilets, so plan around the café or a nearby stop.

For a child who wants ramps rather than swings, Viseu’s free Fontelo skate park is on the other side of the city, next to the Piscinas Municipais de Viseu, where children up to 9 swim free with an adult. Out of town, the Casa das Palmeiras farm in Mangualde and the Quinta da Estaca in Nelas are farm days out in the Dão region.

Is the Parque Urbano de Santiago free?

Yes. It’s a public council park with no entry charge.

Yes. The council’s 2017 magazine lists a playground and other play equipment among the park’s facilities, and Visit Viseu presents it as a family space.
