The Algarve is more than beaches, though the beaches are good. At Praia do Barril a little train takes you over the lagoon to a line of rusting tuna-fishing anchors half-buried in the dunes. Culatra island has no cars at all. Sand City near Lagoa fills a field with giant sand sculptures, and Silves has a red sandstone castle. Zoomarine and the Ciência Viva centre in Lagos both run holiday camps, which helps when you need a day to yourself.
