The Alentejo is big, quiet and hot in summer, and the days out are memorable ones. Badoca Safari Park has giraffes and zebras on the plain. Near Évora, the Almendres standing stones are older than Stonehenge and nobody guards them. The Capela dos Ossos is lined with human bones, which some children love and others won't. There's stargazing at Lake Alqueva, an old mine you can walk into at Lousal, otters at the freshwater aquarium in Mora, and a river beach at Milfontes.
