Praia do Farol

Vila Nova de Milfontes sits on the north bank of the Mira, just where the river runs into the Atlantic, and Praia do Farol is the beach right at that meeting point, below the town’s lighthouse (farol). The municipal tourism office describes it as known for weak waves and easy access, and says it attracts families with children as well as people who come for water sports.

That calm is unusual on this coast. Most beaches in the municipality of Odemira face the open ocean, with the surf to match. At the Farol the river mouth takes some of the force out of the sea, which makes it a friendlier place for a toddler’s first paddle.

The tourism office points out one thing that children love here: at low tide, long stretches of sand are uncovered, and you can walk a long way across them. Sand appears where there was water a few hours earlier. It’s a good place to teach children how tides work, simply by marking where the water is when you arrive and looking again after lunch.

Check the tide tables before you go if you want the full effect, and keep an eye on the time: water comes back into a river mouth faster than children expect, and places that were ankle-deep can fill quickly. Estuaries have currents of their own even when the surface looks gentle, so ask the lifeguards where it is safest to swim.

Odemira’s bathing season in 2026 ran from 30 May to 30 September. The council says its beaches are watched every day during the season from 10:00 to 19:00. Praia do Farol flew a Blue Flag in 2026 and has the Quercus Qualidade de Ouro award for excellent water quality. Outside the season and outside those hours there is no lifeguard.

The municipal listing gives parking, toilets, a restaurant and canoeing at the beach, with a campsite and places to stay nearby. That makes it an easy beach to spend a full morning at without packing the car to the roof. Bring shade: the listing doesn’t mention umbrella hire here, although it does at the neighbouring Franquia.

A little further into the river, beside the Avenida Marginal and closest to the town centre, is Praia da Franquia. The tourism office calls it a real river beach at the mouth of the Mira, one of the busiest and most traditional in Milfontes, with travel writers mentioning it as a bathing spot as early as the 19th century. It says the Franquia is used by families with children and by water-sports fans, with canoeing and stand-up paddleboarding common there.

Its listed facilities include parking, toilets, changing rooms, umbrella hire, a restaurant and a lifeguard. Franquia is not on the 2026 Blue Flag list, so if the flag matters to you, choose the Farol. Otherwise, pick whichever is closer to where you are staying: the two sit along the same north bank.

Both beaches are popular because they are in town, so July and August bring crowds, and parking gets harder as the day goes on. The Farol is still at a river mouth, with tides and currents, so it is gentler than the open coast but not a swimming pool. There’s little natural shade on the sand.

The obvious pairing is Praia das Furnas on the south bank, which you can reach over the bridge or, in the summer months, by a small boat from the town. Back in Milfontes, the municipal garden has space to run about, and A Choupana is a relaxed lunch stop. If you are travelling with a dog, Odemira has an official dog beach upstream of Furnas Rio, which the council says has run since 2021.

South along the coast, Praia do Almograve has natural pools at low tide, and north, the beaches of Porto Covo include Praia da Ilha do Pessegueiro.
