Praia do Malhão

Praia do Malhão is the long, empty-looking beach about 5 km north of Vila Nova de Milfontes. Odemira’s tourism office describes a natural beach of wide white sand that merges into the dunes behind it, well away from any town. Like the whole Odemira coast, it lies inside the Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina, so there are no apartment blocks or promenades here.

It is officially split into two bathing areas, Malhão Norte and Malhão Sul, each with its own lifeguards and its own Blue Flag in 2026. They share the same dirt-road approach, so we cover both on one page.

This is an exposed Atlantic surf beach. The tourism office says the waves here are good for surfing and bodyboarding, and the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA) marks both sections as having “waves of special value”, its label for good surf. That makes it exciting for confident older children and teenagers, and a poor choice for toddlers and non-swimmers who want to splash about. The APA also flags a risk of rockfall at both sections, so keep away from the foot of any cliffs or rocky banks.

If you have small children, the calmer choice nearby is the river side of Praia das Furnas across the Mira estuary, or Praia do Farol at the mouth of the river in Milfontes. Come to Malhão for the space and the waves, and let little ones stick to sandcastles and the very edge of the water with an adult beside them.

In 2026 the bathing season on the Odemira coast ran from 30 May to 30 September, and the council says lifeguards are on duty every day from 10:00 to 19:00 in that period. Swim only in front of the lifeguard post and between the flags. Outside the season, and outside those hours, nobody is watching the water.

Both Malhão Norte and Malhão Sul hold three 2026 awards, according to Odemira council: a Blue Flag, Quercus’s Gold Quality (Qualidade de Ouro) for consistently excellent water, and the ZERO association’s Zero Pollution label. The APA classed the water at both as Excellent, and the latest checks in September 2026 were suitable for bathing.

The tourism office says the access is along a dirt road (estrada de terra batida) near the village of Brunheiras. Expect a slow, dusty drive for the last stretch. There is parking at the beach, toilets and a lifeguard post, and a campsite nearby.

The APA’s beach profile lists a beach bar at Malhão Norte but not at Malhão Sul, and no showers, first-aid post or accessible-beach equipment at either. Bring water, food and shade for the day.

Since 2019 the northern part of Malhão has been an official naturist beach, according to Odemira’s tourism office. Families who would rather avoid it can head for the southern section, Malhão Sul.

The waves make it a beach for watching children closely at all times. The dirt road is slow, there is almost no shade and the sand is wide, so small legs get tired on hot days. There is no buggy-friendly boardwalk or wheelchair equipment listed. And with no town nearby, you need to bring everything with you.

Back in Vila Nova de Milfontes, the Jardim Público has a playground, and A Choupana grills fish and chicken right on Praia do Farol. Further south, Praia do Almograve has rock pools, and north towards Porto Covo, Praia da Ilha do Pessegueiro looks out to an island with Roman ruins.

Is Praia do Malhão safe for toddlers?

It is not a good toddler beach. It is an exposed surf beach with waves good enough for surfing, and the APA notes a rockfall risk. Calmer water is at Praia das Furnas (river side) or Praia do Farol in Vila Nova de Milfontes.
