Praia do Almograve (Norte and Sul)

Almograve is a small village on the Odemira coast, between Vila Nova de Milfontes and Zambujeira do Mar. Its beach sits about 500 metres from the houses and is managed as two bathing areas, Almograve Norte and Almograve Sul, each with its own lifeguards. The municipal tourism office describes the sand as shallow but extensive, and says the beach is a favourite with many families.

Both halves are in the Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina, the protected coast that runs south from here to the Algarve. From the viewpoints on top of the cliffs at Almograve Sul, the tourism office says, you can see the full force of the Atlantic laid out along this coast.

The reason to come to Almograve with children is the tide. According to the municipality, low tide leaves what it calls real natural pools in the rocks, which it describes as a treat for bathers of all ages. Toddlers can sit in shallow, still water, while older children can go pool to pool looking for crabs, snails, anemones and small fish.

High tide is a different beach. The same description warns that at high tide there is usually some breaking surf, and both halves are listed as good for surfing and bodyboarding. So plan around the tide tables: arrive a couple of hours before low tide for the best pools, and move back up the sand as the water returns.

A few rock-pool habits help. Wear water shoes, because rocks are sharp and slippery. Look without lifting, or put stones back exactly as you found them, since this is a natural park. Keep watching the sea while children are absorbed in a pool, as the tide can creep around rocks behind them.

Odemira’s 2026 bathing season ran from 30 May to 30 September, and the council says its beaches were watched every day from 10:00 to 19:00. Both Almograve Norte and Almograve Sul flew Blue Flags in 2026 and hold the Quercus Qualidade de Ouro award for excellent bathing water. Outside those dates and hours there are no lifeguards. Swim in the area the lifeguards are watching, especially when the tide is high and the waves pick up.

The municipal listings give both halves parking, toilets, accommodation nearby and a restaurant, and Almograve Norte also has showers. That covers the basics for a long morning. There is no mention of umbrella hire, so bring your own shade.

Almograve is a different place at high tide. If you arrive when the sea is up, there are waves, fewer pools and less sand, and toddlers will have less to do. The rocks that make the pools are also a hazard for small feet. Neither half is on the 2026 accessible-beach list, so check the access paths before bringing a wheelchair. The Atlantic here is cool, even in August.

North of Almograve, Vila Nova de Milfontes has the gentle river-mouth Praia do Farol and the lifeguarded river beach at Praia das Furnas, plus a municipal garden for running about. South, Praia da Zambujeira do Mar is a cliff-backed village beach, and Praia do Carvalhal has a stream crossing the sand to the sea.
