Zambujeira do Mar is a small village perched on the cliffs of the Odemira coast, near the southern end of the Alentejo, and its beach lies directly below. It was voted Best Urban Beach in the 7 Maravilhas Praias de Portugal competition in 2012, and the municipal tourism office calls it one of the most sought-after beaches in the area. It adds that several generations of Portuguese families think of Zambujeira as “their” beach.

The main beach is flanked by small sandy coves, and the tourism office says the sea has excellent conditions for surfing and bodyboarding. That is the honest summary for parents: this is an Atlantic beach with waves, in a beautiful setting, with good services because it sits right under a village.

Zambujeira do Mar had a Blue Flag in 2026. Odemira’s bathing season ran from 30 May to 30 September 2026, and the council says the beaches were watched every day during the season from 10:00 to 19:00. Swim in the area the lifeguards are watching and check the flag. There is no lifeguard outside the season or outside those hours.

Because it’s a surf beach, it suits children who are confident in waves. Younger children can dig and paddle at the edge with an adult beside them, but it isn’t a calm-water beach.

Zambujeira do Mar is one of four accessible beaches in Odemira in 2026, alongside Furnas Rio, Furnas Mar and Carvalhal. The council says these beaches have reinforced boardwalks and amphibious chairs for both adults and children, provided under the national Praia Acessível, Praia para Todos! programme. The 2026 national list shows Zambujeira do Mar with bathing-assistance equipment but no staffed bathing-assistance service, so bring someone who can help push the chair into the water.

For a child who uses a wheelchair, a cliff-foot beach is usually out of reach, so it is worth ringing the Odemira tourism office before you go to check the chairs are in place that day.

The municipal listing gives the beach parking, toilets, showers and a restaurant, with a campsite and accommodation in the village. Because the village is right above the beach, cafés and shops are close. The listing does not mention umbrella hire, so bring your own shade, since the sand has none.

Just south of the village is Praia dos Alteirinhos, which the tourism office describes as a very quiet beach protected by a high cliff and reached by a flight of steps. It is one of the Odemira beaches officially classified for naturism, in its southern part, and it had a Blue Flag, Quercus gold and Zero Pollution awards in 2026. The steps and the naturist zone make it a less obvious choice with small children, but it helps to know what you’ll find before you set off along the cliff.

Zambujeira is popular, so July and August are busy in the village and on the sand, and parking gets harder later in the day. The sea has surf, and the water is cool.

A few kilometres south, Praia do Carvalhal sits in a deep valley with a stream running across the sand, and is also an accessible beach. Inland, Praia Fluvial de Santa Clara on the Santa Clara reservoir is a calm-water alternative on a windy day. North, Praia do Almograve has natural pools at low tide.
