Piscinas Municipais de Portalegre

Portalegre, the hill city at the foot of the Serra de São Mamede, doesn’t have one big pool complex. The council instead runs a network: a covered, heated pool in the Assentos neighbourhood for the colder months, and four outdoor summer pools, one on the edge of the city at Quinta da Saúde and three in the villages of Ribeira de Nisa, Reguengo and Alegrete.

The prices are very low. When checked in September 2026, children aged 7 to 12 paid 50 cents to get into the Quinta da Saúde or Ribeira de Nisa summer pools, and everything was half price after 18:00.

All four outdoor pools open from 10:00 to 20:00 in the summer season, and each closes on a different weekday, so there’s always at least one open:

• Piscina Municipal da Quinta da Saúde: closed on Mondays. Run directly by the council.
• Piscina Municipal da Ribeira de Nisa: closed on Wednesdays. Run by the council.
• Piscina Municipal da Fonte do Açude, at Reguengo: closed on Tuesdays. Prices are set by the parish council (junta de freguesia).
• Piscina Municipal de Alegrete: closed on Thursdays. Prices set by the parish council.

In 2026 Quinta da Saúde and Alegrete opened on Saturday 13 June, and Ribeira de Nisa and Reguengo followed on 20 June. The season ended in stages: Reguengo and Alegrete closed on 6 September, while the press reported the Serra and Ribeira de Nisa pools staying open until 12 September. The dates move a little each year, so look for the council’s announcement in early June.

The council’s pages don’t describe the pools themselves (depths, children’s pools, shade or cafés), so ring the sports service if you need to know whether there’s a shallow pool for a toddler before you go.

Summer pool prices

The price list linked from the council’s pools page for Quinta da Saúde and Ribeira de Nisa is dated July 2023, and the page itself was updated in June 2026. It gives:

• Ages 7 to 12: €0.50.
• Ages 13 to 16: €1.
• 17 and over: €2.10.
• Groups of children up to 6: €5.10 per group.
• Monthly passes: €7.80 for children, €14.20 for young people and €20.90 for adults, bought at the council offices (Câmara Municipal).
• From 18:00, all prices are halved.
• Holders of the council’s youth card (Cartão Jovem Municipal) get 50% off, and holders of the municipal senior card or social card go free.

The list doesn’t give a price for under-7s coming with their family, so ask at the gate. Reguengo and Alegrete are run with the parish councils, which set their own prices.

The Piscina Municipal dos Assentos is a covered pool on Rua Coronel Jorge Velez Caroço. The council’s page lists these hours:

• Winter: Monday to Friday 09:00 to 13:00 and 16:00 to 21:30; Saturday 09:00 to 13:00; closed on Sunday.
• Summer (as published for 2026): from 15 to 28 June, weekdays 16:00 to 21:30 and Saturday 09:00 to 13:00; from 29 June to 31 July, weekdays 09:00 to 13:00 and closed on Saturday. It then closes for the summer.

A swim costs €1.20 for 45 minutes, or €0.60 for students. That’s a short session, so plan to be changed and ready when your slot starts.

In January 2026 the council closed the indoor pool for repairs to its boilers, because of problems with the air and water temperatures, and for a deeper clean and water treatment. The council’s pools page, updated in June 2026, lists the pool’s June and July hours. After the summer break, check the council’s website for the reopening date before your first visit of the season.

The council’s page doesn’t list the pool’s size, depths, lessons or rules. Ask the sports service about swimming lessons for children and what kit is compulsory.

Portalegre’s main municipal outdoor pool has been closed since 2018. In 2026 it was being rebuilt at a cost of €2.7 million, most of it from EU funds under Portugal 2030. The works include new floors, finishes and pools, and a new pool for children. A second phase is planned to add a landscaped play area outside. In summer 2026 the mayor told Rádio Portalegre that reopening that year would be difficult. For now, families use the Quinta da Saúde and village pools instead.

• Each summer pool shuts on a different weekday, so check the day before you drive out.
• Evening swims after 18:00 cost half price, a good option on a hot day when the sun has dropped.
• The council’s online information is thin on facilities: there’s no published description of pool depths, shade or food at the summer pools.
• The indoor pool’s 45-minute sessions suit a quick swim more than a long family splash.

Portalegre sits in the north Alentejo, close to several pools and days out already on this site. Castelo de Vide’s Piscina Descoberta is a short drive north, and the Crato water park is to the west, if your children want slides. Horse-mad children can visit the Coudelaria de Alter, the royal stud farm at Alter do Chão.
