Piscina Municipal Descoberta de Castelo de Vide

Castelo de Vide is a hill town in the Portalegre district, close to the Spanish border and to the walled village of Marvão. Its outdoor pool, the Piscina Municipal Descoberta, was finished in 2004 and is owned and run by the Câmara Municipal de Castelo de Vide. Alongside the main pool it has two water slides, a small jacuzzi and a separate pool for toddlers.

In 2026 the season was long. The pool opened on Saturday 13 June and stayed open until Sunday 20 September.

The council describes the pools like this:

• The main pool is 25 metres long and 19.5 metres wide, for swimming.
• It joins a smaller pool where two water slides (escorregas aquáticos) splash down.
• Next to the slide pool is a small jacuzzi.
• Set apart from the main pool is a small, round, shallow pool for young children.

Along one side of the pool is a lawn of about 45 square metres for towels. On the other side is seating for 190 spectators, with standing room for 50 more. There are changing rooms and a bar.

The council does not publish depths, water temperature or age limits for the slides. Ask the lifeguards before a young child goes down on their own.

In 2026 the pool opened every day except Tuesday, from 10:00 to 19:30. Tuesday is the weekly closing day.

Prices were the same as the council’s 2025 price list:

• Children up to 6: free
• Students: €1.54
• Adults: €3.18
• Over-65s who live in the municipality: free
• 5-entry pass: €4.37 for students, €8.74 for adults
• 10-entry pass: €6.41 for students, €15.62 for adults

A group can also hire a lane for €15.35 an hour.

A family of two adults with a 5-year-old and a 10-year-old at school would pay about €7.90, assuming the older child counts as a student; ask at the desk what proof they need. If you are staying in town for a week or more, the 10-entry passes bring the cost down a lot, especially the student pass at €6.41 for ten swims.

The council page doesn’t list the pool’s rules. Take swim caps and flip-flops, shower before swimming, and check any rules at the entrance, including whether children need an adult with them.

The lawn is small for a busy summer pool, at about 45 square metres, so on hot weekends space for towels may run out. We found no information about shade, so bring a hat and sun cream and plan for full sun. The pool closes on Tuesdays, so check the day before you drive over. There’s no published information on parking.

Castelo de Vide sits in a cluster of good family outings. Marvão, on its clifftop next door, holds a chestnut fair every November (see What’s on). The Crato council’s water park, with a 30-metre slide and diving boards, is to the south west. The Coudelaria de Alter, the historic stud farm at Alter do Chão, is further on for a morning with horses.

Does Castelo de Vide pool have slides?

Yes. There are two water slides that land in their own pool, joined to the main 25-metre pool.

Is there a pool for toddlers?

Yes. A small, round, shallow pool sits away from the main pool for young children, and under-6s go in free.

How much does it cost?

In 2026 adults paid €3.18 and students €1.54. Children up to 6 were free, and so were over-65s living in the municipality.

When is it open?

In summer only. In 2026 it ran from 13 June to 20 September, 10:00 to 19:30, closed on Tuesdays.

Is there food?

There is a bar at the pool. The council does not describe what it serves, so bring snacks for fussy eaters.
