Parque Verde Urbano de Vidigueira

Vidigueira is a small town in the Baixo Alentejo, in Beja district, known for its wine made in clay talha pots. In May 2024 the Câmara Municipal (town council) opened the Parque Verde Urbano, a new urban green park that cost about €2.6 million with European funding. The council’s own description lists green spaces, espelhos de água (shallow reflecting pools, literally “water mirrors”), a games area, a multi-sports court and links to footpaths and cycle paths. It marked the park’s first birthday on 11 May 2025 with a day of sport and entertainment.

For families, the reason to stop is the playground, which is built as a ship.

The centrepiece is the Parque Infantil Navio Galeão, the galleon playground. The family guide Portugal With Kids describes a themed ship with slides, climbing ropes, ship’s wheels and telescopes, which turns children into sailors and pirates as soon as they climb aboard. It’s the kind of playground that works for role play as much as climbing: one child steers, another keeps a lookout through the telescope, and the rest go down the slides.

For toddlers and the youngest children there’s a separate set of gentler equipment: small boats, swings and interactive play panels.

Around the playground are large lawns and the water mirrors, with shaded corners for sitting and space for a picnic. Paths and cycle paths run right through the park, so children can bring a bike or a scooter. Older children and teenagers can use the multi-sports court and the games area.

• Summers in the Baixo Alentejo are very hot. The playground and paths get the sun, so go in the morning or evening in July and August and check slides before children use them.

Vidigueira is in Beja district, so the Parque da Cidade de Beja, with its new skatepark and duck lake, makes a second stop on the same day. For a museum with a difference, the Museu do Relógio in Serpa is a clock and watch museum in a former convent. Families heading for the Alqueva lake can combine the park with the Centro Alqueva.
