Praia Fluvial do Clube Náutico de Avis

The northern Alentejo, the Alto Alentejo around Portalegre, is a long way from the sea, and families there cool off in rivers and reservoirs. At Avis, the Clube Náutico de Avis complex on the shore of the Maranhão reservoir has a river beach that first won a Blue Flag in 2021 and flew one again in 2026. The Avis council says it is the only river beach in the Alto Alentejo with that award.

It’s the setting that makes it good for families. The council describes a whole leisure complex around the beach: a picnic park, a children’s playground, a sunbathing area, a nautical hangar, a restaurant, a bar, a campsite and the municipal swimming pools. You can swim in the lake, let the children loose on the playground, eat lunch and, if someone would rather have a pool, walk next door.

The regional news site Ardina do Alentejo reported in May 2026 that the beach had renewed its Blue Flag and was opening the season with new features. After renovation work finished in 2025, the council added a floating pool in the reservoir, which gives children a defined area to swim in.

It also made the beach easier to use for more people. The safety rules are now in braille for visitors with visual impairments, the signs use ColorAdd, a system of simple symbols that lets colour-blind people read colour-coded information, and there’s an amphibious chair for people with reduced mobility. Explaining the symbols to children turns the safety board into a small lesson in inclusion.

The council lists open-water swimming, rowing, canoeing and stand-up paddleboarding among the things you can do from the beach, with the nautical hangar as the base. Ask at the Clube Náutico about lessons or hire for children, since the council’s page doesn’t give ages or prices.

The ABAAE gives the 2026 bathing and Blue Flag season at Avis as 1 July to 13 September, which is later to start than most Alentejo river beaches, so check with the council before an early-summer trip. Outside the season there are no lifeguards.

Reservoir water is calm, without waves, but it can deepen quickly a short way out, and levels change over the summer; the 2026 rules noted by the regional press allow temporary restrictions at inland beaches when that happens. Keep small children within reach and use the floating pool and the watched area.

Avis is on the 2026 Praia Acessível, Praia para Todos! list with bathing-assistance equipment, although the list shows no staffed assistance service. With the amphibious chair and the braille and ColorAdd signs, it has gone further than most inland beaches on access.

Inland summers are very hot, so shade and water matter; bring a sunshade even with the complex’s facilities nearby. The official lifeguard season is short, from July to mid-September. The playground, pools and campsite are run separately from the beach, so opening times and any charges vary. Because the council page doesn’t mention parking, we can’t promise space on the busiest days.

Avis is a good base for the Alto Alentejo. Horse-mad children will like the royal stud farm at Coudelaria de Alter, and the Oasis water park in Galveias and the Crato water park are the region’s slide options on a hot day. At Castelo de Vide there’s the Piscina Descoberta open-air pool.
