Praia Fluvial de Albergaria dos Fusos

Most river beaches in the Alentejo sit on bare, sunburnt shores. Albergaria dos Fusos is different: the sand is ringed by cork oaks and holm oaks, the farmed woodland that the Portuguese call montado. Cuba’s mayor told the Lusa news agency that people see it as a different kind of beach because it sits in the middle of the montado, and that is the first thing you notice.

The beach opened in August 2023 on the reservoir of the Alvito dam, which many people call the Albergaria dos Fusos dam after the nearby village. It is close to Vila Ruiva, in the municipality of Cuba, and forms part of a bigger leisure area called the Ecopark do Alentejo Central. The same reservoir has another beach at its far end, at Oriola in the next municipality.

The feature that makes this beach stand out for families is a pair of floating pools moored in the reservoir, one for adults and one for children. A floating pool gives a small child something a lake can’t: a clearly bounded space with sides to hold, while still swimming in the reservoir’s water. For toddlers and nervous swimmers that makes the day much calmer for everyone.

Outside the pools there is a wide bathing area in front of the sand. Visit Cuba, the municipal tourism site, says the bathing zone is 80 metres long and watched by lifeguards from 09:00 to 19:00. The water is freshwater with no waves, and Expresso describes it as mild and calm.

The beach itself is a long stretch of fine white sand with thatched parasols and a few oaks for shade. Behind it the Ecopark has a football and handball pitch and a beach volleyball court, so older children and teenagers have somewhere to burn energy when they tire of swimming. There are picnic areas if you bring your own lunch.

The Ecopark also includes a nautical centre for non-polluting water sports such as canoeing and stand-up paddleboarding. The council told Expresso that no motor boats are used on the water here, which is one reason the beach won its Blue Flag. Ask at the beach about sessions, as times and prices are not published online.

The reservoir is a good place for birdwatching, with a bird observation tower in the Ecopark. According to Expresso, children might spot grey herons, great crested grebes, mallards, great cormorants and little egrets on the water, and azure-winged magpies, golden orioles and crested larks in the trees. In the migration season, flocks of cranes pass over.

A marked walk starts at the beach. “Do Ecopark até Albergaria dos Fusos pelo Montado” runs 2.5 km through the oak woods to the church of Nossa Senhora do Outeiro, with views over the landscape; the circular version is 6.46 km. Do it early in the morning in summer, because there is little shade on the Alentejo plain after mid-morning.

Albergaria dos Fusos held a Blue Flag in 2026, its second year with one, and its bathing season ran from 6 June to 20 September. In 2026 it also joined the Praia Acessível, Praia para Todos! programme, and the 2026 list shows amphibious bathing equipment here. The Portuguese Environment Agency classed the water as Excellent, and the last analysis of the season, on 14 September 2026, was suitable for bathing.

The Boleta restaurant-bar has a terrace looking out over the reservoir (926 737 080). There are toilets, showers, a first-aid post and parking, and the Ecopark also has a motorhome service area.

This is a long drive from the coast and from Lisbon, and there is no public transport listed to the beach, so plan on a car. Alentejo summers are hot, and the shade comes from parasols and scattered trees rather than a big lawn, so bring hats and a parasol of your own on busy days. Lifeguards only work in the bathing season; outside it the pools and water are unsupervised. If you want surf or rock pools, this isn’t the place.

Across the water, Praia Fluvial de Oriola is a newer beach on the same reservoir. Beja’s river beach at Cinco Reis is south, and Parque Verde Urbano in Vidigueira has a playground shaped like a galleon. For a bigger lake day, the Alqueva beaches at Amieira and Alqueva village are further east.
