Praia Fluvial de Alqueva

The Alqueva dam, and the huge lake behind it, take their name from Alqueva, a small village in the municipality of Portel. About 1.5 km from that village, on the lake shore, is Praia Fluvial de Alqueva. The Portel tourism office describes it as a place to enjoy the Grande Lago (the “great lake”, as the reservoir is known locally), and it is one of three Blue Flag beaches in Portel, along with Amieira further up the lake and Oriola on a different reservoir.

It is a large site. Expresso puts the leisure area at more than 15,000 square metres, with sand and a lawn covered by sunshades (toldos) and thatched shades (colmos). For families that lawn matters: toddlers can crawl and nap in the shade without getting a mouthful of hot sand.

The water is freshwater with no waves or tides. The Portuguese Environment Agency (APA) classed it as Excellent, and every check in the 2026 season came back suitable for bathing.

The most useful detail for parents of small children is that the bathing zone is marked off specifically for children’s safety, according to the Portel tourism office. It gives toddlers and new swimmers a clear boundary inside the lifeguarded area. Keep a hand on the youngest anyway: lake beds can drop away beyond the marked zone, and reservoir levels change through the summer.

The tourism office says there are various kinds of leisure equipment to hire at the beach, without listing them or their prices, so ask when you arrive. Older children who want canoes, pedal boats or paddleboards will find a published list at Amieira.

The bar-restaurant looks out over the lake, which makes lunch here an easy part of the day. Being close to the dam, the beach also pairs well with a visit to the Centro Alqueva visitor centre beside the dam wall, where children can see models and machinery that explain how the lake was made and what its water does.

The 2026 bathing season ran from 10 June to 13 September, and the beach renewed its Blue Flag for 2026. The Portel tourism office gives the lifeguard service as 09:00 to 19:00 and lists a lunch period from 12:30 to 13:30; ask at the beach whether the water is watched during that hour.

Alqueva is on the 2026 Praia Acessível, Praia para Todos! list with amphibious bathing equipment, and the APA’s profile lists an amphibious chair, bathing assistance, parking, toilets, showers and a first-aid post. The tourism office also mentions equipment for people with reduced mobility.

Inland Alentejo summers are very hot, and a reservoir beach has little natural shade, so use the sunshades and plan swims for morning and late afternoon. There are no lifeguards outside the bathing season. Public transport to the beach isn’t listed, so you will need a car. And the hire list isn’t published, so don’t promise a boat trip until you have checked.

Beside the dam wall in Moura, Praia do Lago has floating pools with a shallow children’s pool. Further round the lake, Praia Fluvial de Monsaraz sits below the walled village of Monsaraz. After dark, the Dark Sky Alqueva observatory runs stargazing nights in the Alqueva region.
