Praia Fluvial da Amieira

The Alqueva reservoir has several river beaches, and the one at Amieira, in the municipality of Portel, is the largest. The Roteiro do Alqueva tourism portal calls it the biggest certified beach on the lake, and the Portel tourism office gives the numbers: 600 metres of sand, of which 150 metres are watched by lifeguards. It is about a kilometre from the village of Amieira, next to the river quay.

What makes it such an easy family beach is the mix. There’s sand for digging, a lawn with sunshades (toldos) for anyone who can’t face hot sand, and calm fresh water with no waves.

The Portel tourism office says the beach has a separate, marked area in the water for children. For parents of toddlers and new swimmers, that is the most useful detail on this page: a defined zone where small children can splash with a clear boundary, inside the lifeguarded stretch.

Keep your hands on the youngest ones anyway. Lake water can deepen quickly beyond the marked area, and inland bathing waters can change with reservoir levels, which the regional press noted in 2026 can lead to temporary restrictions.

Older children don’t have to stay on the sand. The tourism office lists canoes, pedal boats (gaivotas) and stand-up paddleboards for hire at the beach. A pedal boat is a good first boat for a family with younger children, and paddleboarding on flat water is far easier than on the sea.

Also at Amieira, Amieira Marina runs boat trips on the lake, with return cruises from the marina to Amieira village, the village of Estrela and the Alqueva dam wall, and trips to Monsaraz on request. It also rents houseboats that you drive yourself after about two hours of training. The marina says it has life jackets for small children (up to 30 kg) if you ask, and recommends children always wear them on board.

Amieira had a Blue Flag in 2026, with a bathing season from 10 June to 13 September. The Portel tourism office gives the lifeguard hours as 09:00 to 19:00.

The beach is on the 2026 Praia Acessível, Praia para Todos! list with bathing-assistance equipment (the list does not show a staffed assistance service here). The tourism office describes it as fully inclusive and accessible, with good access and parking.

For a lake beach in the Alentejo countryside, the list is long: a bar and a restaurant, a first-aid post, changing rooms, toilets and outdoor showers, parking, a picnic park and a motorhome park. You can stay all day without leaving, which is why we’ve marked it as a full-day trip.

Inland Alentejo summers are very hot, and the midday sun on a reservoir beach is strong, so use the sunshades on the lawn and plan swims for the morning and later afternoon. The lifeguarded stretch is 150 metres of a 600-metre beach, so swim within it. Outside the bathing season there are no lifeguards. And being a lake, there’s no surf and no rock pools, which some children miss.

Portel has two more Blue Flag river beaches in 2026: Praia Fluvial de Alqueva, also on the Alqueva lake, and Praia Fluvial de Oriola, which is on the Alvito reservoir. Across the water, Praia Fluvial de Monsaraz sits below the walled village of Monsaraz, and Praia Fluvial de Mourão has a floating pool.
