Jardim Público de Ferreira do Alentejo

Ferreira do Alentejo is a small town in Beja district, and its Jardim Público (public garden) is the town’s favourite green space. The council describes it as a garden right in the middle of the town that local people use a lot. On Saturday 5 September 2026, at 10:30, the Câmara Municipal opened a rebuilt playground there, with a morning of children’s entertainment. The council said the new design puts the emphasis on safety, comfort, accessibility and fun. It had not published a list of the new equipment when we checked, so the details of what’s there are something to discover on the day.

The rest of the garden makes it a pleasant stop on its own. The family guide Portugal With Kids describes shade trees, flower beds and a pond with ducks, which small children usually love, along with slides and swings in the play area.

The garden has a bar with an esplanada (outdoor terrace). In works finished in June 2019 the council put a roof over the terrace, refurbished the toilets, built a boardwalk and a path to the amphitheatre, and repaired the benches and other garden furniture. A year later, in April 2020, the amphitheatre got a waterproof tensile roof over the stage, the seating and the area around it, with six floodlights and a projection screen 5.5 metres wide and 4 metres high on the stage, so events can go ahead in any weather. There’s outdoor fitness equipment for adults and older children, and a bandstand.

In summer the council runs Verão Ativo (active summer) in the garden: free outdoor exercise classes in June and July, with no need to sign up in advance. In 2026 the sessions were on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 19:00, with HIIT, small-group training and a Latin-Caribbean dance class run by local instructors and a running club. They’re aimed at adults, but a parent can join in while children play nearby, and 19:00 is when the heat starts to ease.

Toddlers get the new playground, the ducks and paths to toddle along between the flower beds. Children of 4 to 8 will spend most of their time on the play equipment and watching the pond. Older children may be more interested in the fitness equipment or an evening event in the amphitheatre, but the garden is a short stop rather than a day out for them.

Ferreira do Alentejo is in Beja district, so it pairs well with the Parque da Cidade de Beja and its skatepark, or the mining museum at the Parque Mineiro de Aljustrel. Further west, the Centro Ciência Viva do Lousal is a hands-on science centre in an old mine.
