Praia Fluvial da Tapada Grande

The village of Mina de São Domingos, in the municipality of Mértola near the Spanish border, grew up around a huge copper mine. The Mértola tourism office explains that the British company that ran it, Mason & Barry, built two freshwater reservoirs in the 19th century to supply the mining works and the village. The mine closed in 1966, and the bigger of those reservoirs, the Tapada Grande, is now a river beach.

The tourism office describes it as calm, clear water in the middle of varied greenery, a place for relaxing and for playing, for children and adults alike. For families in the far south-east of the Alentejo, where summers are very hot and the sea is a long drive away, it’s the local beach.

The water is flat and fresh, so toddlers can paddle without being knocked over and new swimmers can build confidence. Older children can get out on the lake: the tourism office lists pedal boats (gaivotas) and paddleboards for hire, and suggests hiring a canoe or pedal boat to explore the shoreline.

The beach café sells bolas de Berlim, the sugar-dusted custard doughnuts that Portuguese children expect at any beach, according to the tourism office, which clearly considers them essential.

Summer evenings are the surprise. The tourism office says there are open-air film screenings in the amphitheatre near the beach on summer nights, along with music and sports events. Check the Mértola events calendar for this year’s programme before you plan an evening around it.

Tapada Grande has flown a Blue Flag every year since 2012, including 2026, and the tourism office says its water holds the Quercus gold quality award. The 2026 bathing season, with lifeguards, ran from 30 May to 13 September. In 2026 the beach also came third in the public vote for Praia Fluvial do Ano (River Beach of the Year), according to the Mértola council.

A reservoir can deepen quickly away from the edge. Keep toddlers close, swim in the watched area and check the flag. There’s no lifeguard outside the season.

Tapada Grande is part of the Praia Acessível programme, on the 2026 list with bathing-assistance equipment. The tourism office lists access to the beach, reserved parking, shade and an amphibious chair for people with reduced mobility.

The tourism office’s list is generous for a small village beach: a bar with a terrace serving light meals, changing rooms, a foot-wash, a picnic area, a free car park, the amphitheatre and a bike station. There is accommodation and places to eat in the village nearby.

The mining landscape around the village is part of what makes a visit interesting, but water in the old mine workings is a different matter from the reservoir beach. Mina de São Domingos is remote, in the far south-east of the Alentejo, so it’s a long drive from the coast or from Lisbon. The interior summer heat is intense, so plan swims for the morning and late afternoon. It’s a lake, so there’s no surf and no rock pools.
