Praia dos Pescadores

Praia dos Pescadores, the fishermen’s beach, is the beach right below Albufeira’s old town. The name comes from the brightly painted wooden fishing boats that used to be pulled up on the sand here. Those boats have since moved to the modern harbour at Albufeira marina, and the beach is now the busy heart of the resort.

It sits where the cliffs dip down. To the west it runs on into Praia do Peneco, and to the east it ends at a pier. Behind it, white houses climb the rocks in tiers, and a strip of bars and restaurants sits just back from the sand.

For a family staying in Albufeira without a car, this is the easiest beach day there is. You walk down from the town, and the toilets, cafés, lifeguards and ice cream are all within a few minutes of your towels.

VisitAlgarve describes two ways down. The main one is through Largo 25 de Abril, a big paved square where children ride scooters and skateboards, which leads straight to the beach. The other is a set of escalators down the cliff at the eastern end, which saves a long climb back up with a tired child.

The beach is on the national list of accessible beaches for 2026, and it has an amphibious chair so wheelchair users can get into the sea. Albufeira council lists it under the name Tiralô, a brand of floating beach chair. Ask the lifeguards or the beach concession about using it.

Walk west along the sand and you reach Praia do Peneco. It is named after the huge warm-coloured rock stack standing on the beach, a lump of cliff that has resisted the sea while the rest wore back. Locally these stacks are called penecos. Children tend to love it, but both the council and VisitAlgarve warn about rockfalls, so admire it from a distance rather than sitting under it.

Peneco has its own way in, and it is one of the odder beach entrances in the Algarve. From the narrow streets of the old town you walk through a tunnel dug through the limestone cliff, which comes out on a big terrace with cafés above the beach. There are also stairs and a lift from the viewpoint at the western end. Peneco had a Blue Flag in 2026, and like Pescadores it is an accessible beach with an amphibious chair and lifeguards in season.

Albufeira has a longer bathing season than most of the Algarve. In 2026 Pescadores and Peneco had lifeguards from 15 May to 15 October, as set in the national Portaria for the year. The beach faces south, and the national records list it as a place with waves of interest, so there will be days with more swell. Stay in the area the lifeguards watch and check the flag.

The Agência Portuguesa do Ambiente rated the water at Pescadores good for the previous season, and it was marked suitable for bathing at the 15 September 2026 sample. Pescadores was not on the 2026 Blue Flag list; its neighbour Peneco was.

The council’s page lists a bar, a restaurant, a first-aid post, a recreation area and the amphibious chair. The national records add toilets and showers. Sunbed and umbrella hire is available from the concessions, and there are many more restaurants and ice-cream places in the square and the streets behind.

This is a town-centre beach in one of the Algarve’s busiest resorts. VisitAlgarve describes it as very busy, and in July and August the sand fills up. If you have a child who struggles with crowds and noise, try early in the morning, or choose a bigger beach such as Praia da Falésia a short drive east.

Parking near the sea is restricted. VisitAlgarve puts the larger car parks about 200 m from Pescadores and about 600 m from Peneco, so you will be walking with your beach things either way.

There is little natural shade, and the cliffs at either end can shed stones. The strip behind the beach is lively into the evening, which is fun for older children and less so for a baby trying to nap.

Play Albufeira has soft play and a Lego wall for a break from the sun. The underground electric karts at Albufeira Marina suit older children and teenagers who meet the height rule. Parque da Alfarrobeira has the biggest playground in the municipality, and Zoomarine in Guia is a full day out.

Is Praia dos Pescadores good for toddlers?

Yes, if you don’t mind crowds. It is easy to reach on foot, there are toilets and food close by, and lifeguards watch the beach from mid-May to mid-October.

Can you take a buggy?

The main route is across a paved square straight to the beach, and there are escalators at the eastern end. Once on the sand you will be pushing through soft sand, so a carrier helps.

Is it wheelchair accessible?

It is listed as an accessible beach for 2026 with an amphibious chair. Peneco next door is too, with a lift from the western viewpoint.

Is there parking?

Parking right by the beach is limited. There are larger car parks about 200 m away, and many families staying in Albufeira simply walk.

Does Praia dos Pescadores have a Blue Flag?

Not in 2026. Praia do Peneco, the next beach west along the same sand, did.
