Parque de Lazer da Mata da Conceição

The Mata Nacional da Conceição is a 457-hectare national forest in the Tavira municipality, about 5 km inland from the coast, between the hills and the sea. Pines, cork oaks, carob trees and strawberry trees give shade and shelter to birds and mammals. Inside it, the council runs a fenced leisure park of about 40 hectares, the Parque de Lazer da Mata da Conceição, with a playground, picnic areas and walking trails.

The stars are the fallow deer (gamos). Tavira’s tourism office describes a small herd living in semi-captivity; a February 2025 report counted 24. They are wild animals but used to people, and a local paper called the park a deer sanctuary. The council says the herd grew from one deer taken in from elsewhere and a female bought later, which then bred.

The park’s warden, who has worked there since 2019, feeds the deer every day, often by hand. He invented his own call: he blows a horn, and the deer come running from wherever they are in the park because they link the sound with food. He told the local paper Barlavento that children “go wild” when it happens.

The deer spread out and hide well. In summer they look for cool, shady spots; in winter, sheltered ones. Females disappear for a while when they are about to give birth. They are calm and not aggressive, he says, and when children bother them they simply walk away.

A few things help everyone:

• Don’t feed the deer. Their main food is grass, leaves and bark, and the warden has seen them eat bread, roast meat and chips from picnics, which isn’t good for them. The mayor has said there are sometimes complaints that deer come too close to picnickers.
• Keep a respectful distance and let children watch quietly. “We are in their home,” the warden says.
• Only males grow antlers, and they shed them each year between March and April.

In August 2021 a huge wildfire that started in Castro Marim burned 257 hectares of the forest, including all 40 hectares of the leisure park. All the animals survived, but the kiosk, barbecues and picnic tables burned, and the park stayed closed until June 2024. Since then the council has replaced the facilities, installed a new playground, added cooking grills (fogareiros) with shade, improved the signs and marked out walking routes.

The tourism office lists:

• a playground (parque infantil)
• a picnic park (parque de merendas)
• a viewpoint (miradouro)
• a hide for watching water birds
• a small amphitheatre
• washrooms (balneários)

The council hasn’t published a description of the new playground’s equipment or age range.

Signed trails through the forest run from 1 km to 2.4 km, short enough for most children. As well as the deer, you might see wild boar, foxes, rabbits, hares, chameleons, ducks, swallows and robins. Around the lagoon live toads, frogs, terrapins and snakes. The council plans more work on the lagoon edges, replanting trees for wildlife.

In August and September 2026 the council ran a free outdoor programme at the park, with yoga, walks, stargazing, ecstatic dance and family camping. The programme returns in summer, so check the council’s news for dates.

Toddlers get the playground, the picnic spot and deer to watch. Children aged 4 to 7 can walk the 1 km trail and spot animals round the lagoon. Big kids can do the longer trails, use the bird hide and look for chameleons. Teenagers may enjoy the summer stargazing and camping nights.

• The forest gives shade, which makes this a good summer picnic spot, but the playground and paths can still be hot in the afternoon.
• The park is fenced and the gates are opened and closed by staff, so it isn’t open round the clock. Hours aren’t published on the tourism page.
• The forest is recovering from fire. Some areas are still being replanted.
• Bring everything for a picnic; the old kiosk burned in 2021, and a replacement isn’t mentioned.

• Head to the coast for Praia do Barril and its anchor cemetery.
• The Centro Ciência Viva de Tavira is a hands-on science centre in town.
• Cool off at the Tavira municipal pools.
• East towards the border, the new Vila Real de Santo António skate park sits beside a playground.

Can you see deer at Mata da Conceição?

Yes. About 24 fallow deer live in the park and are used to people. You can often see them near the picnic areas.

Can children feed the deer?

It’s best not to. The warden feeds them a special cereal mix, and their natural food is grass, leaves and bark.

Is there a playground?

Yes. A new one was installed after the 2021 fire, when the park reopened in 2024.
