Majestoso Skate Park (Skate Parque de Olhão)

Olhão’s skate park opened on 30 January 2016 and was named the Majestoso (the majestic). It sits beside the railway line in town. The idea behind it, according to the council, came from Olhão’s fishing life: the shapes of the obstacles and ramps were drawn to carry something of the harbour and the town into the park. The designers also laid it out like a square (praça), so it feels like a piece of the surrounding streets.

It was designed and developed by a local association, Park & Ride, and built for about €60,000, far less than the €400,000 in the original project, the mayor said at the opening. On opening day it hosted a national skate contest.

The council says the park was planned for different ages and levels, with three grades of difficulty: iniciação (starting out), preparação (building skills) and aperfeiçoamento (perfecting). It copies the obstacles skaters find in the street, such as ledges and steps, and adds ramps.

That matters for children. A park built only for experts can be intimidating; here, a child on their first board or scooter has somewhere to roll while older riders use the harder lines. The council hasn’t published a list of the individual obstacles or a size.

Children aged 4 to 7 can practise rolling, pushing and stopping in the beginner area, ideally with a parent close by and at a quiet time.

From about 8 to 12, children who can already ride can start using small ramps and ledges and join in at open lessons on event days.

Teenagers get the advanced lines and a lively scene of contests, jams and festivals.

The park had gone quiet for a while. In November 2025 a youth association, Wallride, and the council ran a Campeonato & Skate Meeting (contest and skate meet-up) that marked what the council called the return of Olhão’s young people to their skate park. The new councillor for sport said repairs had started with the drinking fountain and a clean-up, and promised toilets, more benches, better lighting and a small meeting room. Later, the council plans to extend the park with areas more accessible to all ages. “We want it to be a place for families to spend time together,” he said.

Those improvements were promises at the time. Check what is in place before you go, especially toilets.

• 10th anniversary, 31 January 2026. A free day from 10:00 to 21:00, organised by Park & Ride with the council, with open skate lessons from the Clube Skate de Olhão, a workshop building a mini quarter pipe with Pedro Roseiro (the national skate team selector), Cash for Tricks and Best Trick contests, film screenings, concerts and live painting.
• Park & Ride Fest, 23 and 24 May 2026. The first edition of a free urban culture festival at the skate park, part of Olhão’s youth and associations fair, with skate and inline freestyle, a freestyle motocross (FMX) show, basketball demonstrations, concerts, workshops and a children’s area.
• Contest and meet-up days, such as the November 2025 meeting with a “Skate Experience” in the morning and “Best Trick” and “Game of Skate” competitions in the afternoon.

Dates change from year to year. Look for news from the council or local press before you travel.

The council hasn’t published a helmet rule for this park. Helmets, knee pads, elbow pads and wrist guards are sensible for children, and the Algarve sun makes concrete hot in summer, so early mornings and evenings are the comfortable times. On event days the park is crowded; beginners do better on a quiet weekday.

• Quinta de Marim, the Ria Formosa nature park centre, is just east of Olhão, with trails and birds.
• Boats from Olhão cross the lagoon to Ilha da Culatra.
• In Faro, Parque de Lazer das Figuras has a pump track and a rebuilt playground.

Is Olhão skate park free?

Yes. It’s a public council skate park with no entry charge.

Is it suitable for beginners?

Yes. The council says it was designed with levels for beginners, improvers and advanced riders.

Are there toilets?

Not when the council last reported in November 2025. It promised to add them, along with more benches and better lighting, so check before you go.

Are there skate lessons in Olhão?

Open lessons run on event days, such as the 10th anniversary in January 2026. Local clubs and associations organise these.

Why is it called the Majestoso?

That’s the name it was given when it opened in 2016. The council and the local press also call it the Skate Parque de Olhão.
