Parque Municipal de Loulé

The Parque Municipal de Loulé is the town’s main park and, in the council’s words, its green lung. It has a lot of mature trees and garden areas for picnics, fitness trails, sports courts, two playgrounds and a skate park, and the municipal pools sit alongside. Visit Loulé, the council’s tourism site, says it is open every day, 24 hours a day.

In April 2026 the council reopened the park’s main playground after a full rebuild, part of a €600,000 plan to modernise the park’s play and leisure areas. It’s the best reason to visit with young children right now.

The south playground sits right at the entrance, next to the monument to engineer Duarte Pacheco. It reopened on Thursday 9 April 2026 with a new theme: a pequena vila de floresta, or little forest village.

The new equipment is made from robinia wood, a natural timber chosen because it lasts. Children will find:

• rope bridges between the structures
• climbing nets
• play pieces shaped like things from nature: an ant, a snail and water lilies

The council says it chose inclusive equipment that gives children of different ages different ways to play, and that the aim was to encourage movement, thinking and social play through contact with nature.

The old gravel (saibro) area on the north side of this playground became a new zone just for the youngest children, so toddlers have their own space away from bigger climbers. The picnic tables nearby were swapped for larger ones, so a family can sit together.

The park has a second playground further in. Visit Loulé describes a playground on a synthetic surface, properly fenced, with brightly coloured equipment. In April 2026 the council said it was adding two new pieces of equipment to the north playground. Fencing matters when you have a toddler who runs, so this is a good one to know about.

Loulé’s skate park opened on 25 April 2015, when the town was European City of Sport, and cost about €130,000. It sits on an 18,000 m² plot at the northern end of the park, towards the ring road, on land where the Bairro de Santa Luzia neighbourhood once stood.

It’s built for skateboards, BMX freestyle and inline skates, in two linked zones:

• a transition (ramp) area built around a bowl, the rounded pool shape that the designers say is the closest thing to riding a wave
• a street plaza modelled on a town square, with steps, low walls, benches and sloping walls to ride, split into lanes of different difficulty

The whole park is built in terraces down the natural slope, so there are several levels, with green areas and resting spots in between. The designers built in different levels of difficulty so that riders can progress at their own pace.

The designers list skateboards, BMX and inline skates. Scooters aren’t mentioned, so check any signs at the entrance before a child rides in on one, and keep little ones on the flatter levels.

The council asks skate park users in the municipality to wear a helmet, elbow pads and knee pads. For children, add wrist guards.

In 2020 the park grew by about two hectares on its northern side, next to the skate park. That extension added a synthetic grass pitch, a street workout area, a running path, a pétanque (boules) platform and a street basketball court. It’s where older children and teenagers tend to end up once they’ve outgrown the playground.

Toddlers get their own zone in the south playground and the fenced playground. Children aged 4 to 7 get the rope bridges, nets and animal pieces, plus room to scoot on the paths. Big kids can climb, play basketball and start on the flatter parts of the skate park. Teenagers use the bowl, the street plaza and the courts.

• Shade: the park’s trees make it one of the cooler places in town on a hot afternoon, though the skate park and courts are in the open.
• Food: bring a picnic. The park has picnic areas; there is no café listed in the council’s descriptions.
• Pools: the Loulé municipal pools are next door for a swim after playing.
• Works: in 2026 the council was also working on drainage near the pools and on fencing and table tennis tables by the rugby building near the António Aleixo amphitheatre. Parts of the park may be fenced off.

• Go underground at the Loulé rock-salt mine.
• For a water park, Aquashow is near Quarteira.
• For a bigger skate park day, Olhão’s Majestoso Skate Park and the park at Parque da Alfarrobeira in Albufeira are both a short drive away.

Is Parque Municipal de Loulé free?

Yes. It’s a public park, and Visit Loulé lists it as open every day, around the clock.

Is there a playground for toddlers?

Yes. Since April 2026 the south playground has a separate area for the youngest children, and the second playground is fenced.

Does Loulé have a skate park?

Yes, at the northern end of the Parque Municipal, with a bowl and a street plaza. It opened in 2015.

Is there shade?

Yes, the park has a lot of mature trees. The skate park and sports courts are more exposed.

Can we have a picnic?

Yes. There are picnic areas, and new, larger picnic tables by the main playground.
