Parque Urbano do Parchal

The Parque Urbano do Parchal opened on Saturday 21 March 2026. It’s the first park of its kind in the Lagoa municipality, built on about 33,000 square metres (3.3 hectares, roughly three football pitches) of unused land in Parchal, the town on the Lagoa side of the river Arade opposite Portimão. Hundreds of people, many of them families, came to the opening.

The council describes it as a place for leisure, sport and getting together, with children’s equipment, equipment for older people, a workout area and a leisure area with a bar “designed for families to spend time together”. It cost about €2.8 million, part-funded with €1.8 million from the ALGARVE 2030 regional programme.

• Children’s play areas (espaços infantis). The council hasn’t published a list of the equipment or the age ranges, so we can’t describe individual slides or climbing frames yet.
• A central lake, created to encourage wildlife and give native species somewhere to live. It’s worth a slow walk round to see what has moved in.
• Open green areas and resting spots between the paths, good for running about.
• Picnic areas (parques de merendas).
• Outdoor fitness equipment and a workout area, which older children and teenagers can use too.
• A leisure area with a bar, so parents can get a drink without leaving the park.

Running through the park is a 1,500-metre cross-country course (pista de corta-mato) built to official standards. Before the park was even formally opened, it hosted the 31st European Cross Country Championships on 13 and 14 December 2025. For children who like to race, a loop of a real championship course is a fun challenge, and it’s a good place to watch local running events.

The park was planted with 525 trees and more than 14,000 shrubs, mostly Mediterranean species that cope with the Algarve’s heat and need little water. It uses drip irrigation, smart watering controlled by a real-time monitoring system, and permeable paving that lets rain soak into the ground, and it is prepared to use recycled water. That’s a useful talking point for children: why a park in a dry place looks different from a lawn-filled park in a rainy country.

Because the planting is new, expect limited shade for a few years. In summer, come in the early morning or the evening.

The published opening hours are unusually long, which suits the Algarve summer, when the middle of the day is too hot for playgrounds:

• Summer: every day, 07:00 to midnight
• Winter: every day, 07:00 to 23:00

Toddlers and young children get the play areas and a walk round the lake. Children aged 4 to 7 can run, scoot on the paths and try the play equipment. Big kids and teenagers have space for ball games, the fitness equipment and a lap of the cross-country course.

• The park is new, so equipment, planting and signs are fresh, and details may change as it settles in.
