Parque Urbano Encontro das Gerações

The Parque Urbano Encontro das Gerações (Meeting of Generations town park) opened on 26 June 2026 in the Quinta dos Arcos estate in Armação de Pêra, the beach town in the Silves municipality. The council designed it as a place for children, young people, adults and older people to spend time together and keep active, hence the name. It cost about €1.2 million, of which €670,000 came from the supermarket chain Lidl as part of a planning agreement when it opened a store in the town.

For families, three things stand out: a playground with a boat, a train and a rocket; a miniature road-safety circuit; and a skate park.

This is the part small vehicle fans will head for. The council calls it a circuito pedagógico rodoviário, an educational road circuit, built so children can learn how roads work through play. It recreates everyday traffic situations:

• a level crossing (passagem de nível), the place where a road crosses a railway
• a petrol station (posto de abastecimento)
• a garage (oficina)
• a car wash (zona de lavagem)
• zebra crossings for pedestrians
• road markings and road signs, and a roundabout, according to the report from the opening

Bring a balance bike, bike or scooter, and children can ride the roads, stop at the crossings and “fill up” at the petrol station. It’s a good way to practise road rules before riding on real streets, and it suits the youngest riders best.

The playground has themed play structures shaped like a boat, a train and a rocket. The council describes it as a varied playground but hasn’t published a list of the individual pieces or age ranges.

For older children and teenagers there is a skate park, for “practitioners and lovers of the sport”, in the council’s words, plus outdoor fitness equipment and a street workout area. The council hasn’t published the skate park’s size or obstacles. Beginners and scooter riders may find the road circuit easier to start on.

Helmets are sensible on the skate park and on the road circuit for younger riders.

The park has lighting, wide paths, a stage for community events and toilets. It is also fenced, which is good news if you have a toddler who bolts.

The fence has a history. The mayor said at the opening that the park had been badly vandalised before it could open, including the toilets, which had never been used. The council repaired everything and decided to fence the park and fit gates. The parish council of Armação de Pêra now holds the keys, opens and closes the park and looks after its upkeep. The practical effect is that the park isn’t open around the clock: opening times weren’t published when we checked, so ask the parish council or check the gates when you arrive.

Toddlers get the playground and a gentle walk or push round the road circuit. Children aged 4 to 7 get the most from the circuit on bikes, balance bikes and scooters, and from the playground. Big kids can ride the circuit faster, try the skate park and use the fitness bars. Teenagers get the skate park and street workout area.

• It’s in a residential area of Armação de Pêra, away from the beachfront. The council hasn’t published parking details.
• Summer heat: go in the morning or evening. Lighting means the park can be used after dark when it is open.
• The park is new, and the local authorities have asked everyone to help look after it.

• Aqualand Algarve water park is in nearby Alcantarilha.
• Castelo de Silves, a red sandstone castle, is inland in Silves.
• Slide & Splash water park is a short drive west near Lagoa.
• For a bigger skate park, Albufeira’s skate park at Parque da Alfarrobeira is to the east.
