Skatepark de Altura

Altura is a small beach village on the eastern Algarve coast, in the municipality of Castro Marim, between Tavira and Monte Gordo. Its old skatepark sat beside the village tennis courts. In December 2025, when the council reopened the courts with a new surface, it announced that the skatepark would be next, to make it safer and bring the equipment up to date.

The rebuild went further than that. A|Park, the Portuguese company that designed and built the new park, says it was completely reconstructed in 2026 and calls it one of the most complete and modern concrete skateparks in the Algarve. It opened in time for the village’s summer festivities in early July 2026, when it hosted the first Altura Skate Open.

The park covers about 600 square metres, all poured concrete. The builder lists:

• an open bowl, a rounded dip that skaters ride round and up the sides of
• quarter pipes of different heights, curved ramps to ride up and turn on
• corners, where two ramps meet at an angle
• hips, where two ramps meet at a peak so a rider can carve or jump across
• a pyramid, a raised block with sloping sides
• a funbox for grinds, a flat-topped box with ledges to slide along
• a bigger section for more experienced riders

The builder says it’s worth a visit for the variety and quality of the obstacles as well as for the location.

This is a park with a lot going on, and the bowl and the larger section are for riders who already have control and speed. Younger beginners can still get plenty out of it at a quiet time: the flat areas, the lower quarters and the grind box are where most children start. A small child on a scooter will be happiest with a parent nearby, keeping to the edges and away from the bowl.

At the opening competition, the programme included taster sessions alongside the contest, and a live podcast on urban sports with guests from skating, scootering and inline skating. The council’s partners for the day included A|Park and the Portuguese Institute of Sport and Youth.

The council hasn’t published rules on helmets or which wheels are allowed. Helmets, knee pads and wrist guards are sensible for any child, and especially in a concrete bowl.

• Location: on Altura’s main avenue, beside the tennis courts on Praceta Professor Luís Amaro. The builder puts it about 200 metres from Praia de Altura.
• Parking: free, near the park, according to the builder.
• Getting there: Altura is reached from the A22. The builder notes buses from Faro.
• Shade: none is mentioned. On a summer day, concrete gets hot and there’s a lot of glare, so go early in the morning or in the evening and bring water.
• The tennis courts next door are free to use with registration, but the council’s rules ban bikes, scooters and skateboards on the courts, so keep wheels on the skatepark side.
• Toilets, lighting and opening hours aren’t published for the skatepark. Check before you go.

Altura is a summer holiday village, so the park will be busiest in July and August evenings, when older riders turn up. Early mornings and the shoulder months (May, June, September and October) are calmer for a beginner. The village festivities in early July, which in 2026 included the Altura Skate Open, are the time to watch good skaters, not the time for a nervous first ride.

• The next beach west is Praia da Manta Rota, with small, slow waves and accessible-beach facilities.
• East along the coast, the Vila Real de Santo António skate park is a smaller street park next to a playground, a good place for less confident children.
• Inland, the river beach at Odeleite has floating pools, one of them for children, on a reservoir in the Castro Marim hills.
• For shade, a playground and a herd of fallow deer, try the Mata da Conceição leisure park near Tavira.

Does Altura have a skatepark?

Yes. The village skatepark beside the tennis courts was rebuilt in concrete in 2026 and hosted its first competition, the Altura Skate Open, in July 2026.

Is Altura skatepark free?

It’s a public council skatepark and no charge has been published.

Is it suitable for young beginners?

Parts of it are. The lower quarters, flat areas and grind box suit beginners at quiet times. The bowl and the big section are for experienced riders.

How far is it from the beach?

About 200 metres from Praia de Altura, according to the builder.

Can children use scooters there?

The council hasn’t published rules on scooters. The opening event’s talk on urban sports included guests from scootering, but check any signs at the park.
