Boa Sombra Skatepark

Boa Sombra (“good shade” in Portuguese) opened in 2025 in a quiet spot in the Peniche area. It’s a privately run skate park, and an unusual one: the skatepark directory Trucks and Fins points out that it was built by its community rather than by one of the big contractors who build council parks. The venue describes itself as an all-weather playground for every level of skater.

The all-weather part matters. The public skate parks nearby, in Lourinhã and Torres Vedras, are open-air, so a covered wooden park lets a child keep skating on a wet day.

According to Trucks and Fins, Boa Sombra combines a sheltered wooden skate park with outdoor riding areas. The obstacles include banks, quarter pipes, a mini ramp, a pyramid, a funbox, ledges, manual pads, flat rails, handrails and kickers, so there are lines for street skating and for transition (the curved ramps). The directory also lists lights and toilets.

Around the skating, the venue has a community garden, a trampoline in the backyard and a chill-out area, and it has advertised art jams and movie nights. In September 2025, shortly after opening, it hosted the Portugal Rookie Fest, the Portuguese stop of the World Rookie Tour, a competition for young riders from around the world.

Classes are the main reason for a family to come. Boa Sombra offers group sessions and private lessons for kids, teens and adults, with experienced instructors, from complete beginners to skaters refining tricks. You request a class through a form on the website (there’s an option for lessons in English) or by email.

No prices or minimum age were published when we checked, so ask both questions when you get in touch. The website doesn’t say whether children can be left with the coach for a class, so don’t assume it. Plan to stay unless the venue tells you otherwise.

For groups, Boa Sombra runs private sessions aimed at surf camps and group trips, with boards included, and it hosts birthdays and events.

When we checked, the website said Boa Sombra opens every day from 17:00 to 20:00. On Sundays from 15:00 there’s Free Skate Sunday, a free community session with no sign-up: bring a board and turn up. The venue’s description of it mentions music and cold beers, so it’s a relaxed, grown-up crowd as well as kids. Families with small children may prefer a booked class or a quieter weekday.

Outside those sessions, Trucks and Fins lists a skate park fee, so expect to pay for general riding. Confirm the current price before you go.

It’s one of the better places on the coast to start, because of the classes and because a wooden indoor park is more forgiving than concrete in the rain. The mini ramp and funbox suit a child who has a few sessions behind them. For a first-timer, a class is the way in.

Bring a helmet, and wrist, knee and elbow pads if you have them. Ask the venue whether it lends boards or pads for classes, and whether scooters are allowed, since neither was published.

Peniche is the departure point for boat trips to Berlenga Island, a nature reserve with a sea fort and nesting seabirds. On a wet day, the Peniche municipal pool is another indoor option. Further south, the free concrete Lourinhã skate park sits in the same town as Dino Parque Lourinhã.
