Skate Parque da Lourinhã

Lourinhã is best known to families for dinosaurs, but it also has one of the older council skate parks on the Oeste coast. The Skate Parque da Lourinhã was built in concrete in 2005 by SKATELOPEZ, the design brand of the Portuguese builder Gaspar, and sits in the centre of town near the main municipal sports facilities, on Avenida Maestro Manuel Maria Baltazar.

The Município da Lourinhã lists it among its sports facilities with free access (acesso livre) for skateboarding, inline skating and freestyle BMX. That page was last updated in February 2026.

The builder describes the layout as about 60% street and 40% transition, the curved surfaces of bowls and ramps. Its official list counts 2 bowls, 16 ramps, 7 curbs and 3 handrails.

The skatepark directory Trucks and Fins describes how it fits together: two smaller bowls flow into a larger open bowl, next to a street section with banks, ledges, stairs, rails, a manual pad, a funbox, a spine and a mini ramp. For a town of around 9,000 people, the directory calls it a surprisingly big local park. A guesthouse guide from Ericeira also mentions a café next to it and lighting for evening sessions.

It depends on what they can already do. There’s no dedicated beginners’ zone, and bowls and stairs aren’t where a first-timer should be. A child who can push, turn and stop on a skateboard, or ride a BMX confidently, will find plenty here: the mini ramp and the smaller bowls are the natural next step after a flat playground.

Be honest with yourselves about condition, too. This park is over 20 years old. On the Trucks and Fins page, one skater’s review from about two years ago says the park has become rundown and needs improvement, while another calls it a good place to bring children, with places to eat and drink nearby. Take a look before your child drops in.

Scooters aren’t on the council’s list of allowed uses. Helmets and pads are sensible on any concrete park, and essential in the bowls.

If you have younger children who won’t skate, the town’s Parque Urbano da Várzea has a playground that reopened in summer 2025 after a €36,000 refurbishment. The council closed it earlier because it had deteriorated, and the new equipment is for children aged 3 to 12. The same park has a free open-air sports court of 27 by 17 metres for futsal and mini basketball.

For a full day out, Dino Parque Lourinhã has more than 200 life-size dinosaur models along forest trails. For swimming lessons, the village pool at Marteleira runs classes from babies to teenagers. Further south, the Parque Verde da Várzea in Torres Vedras has a skate park rebuilt in 2025 and a big playground, and the Boa Sombra skate park near Peniche has an indoor area and lessons.

• With a beginner, pick a quiet moment and watch how the regulars use the park first.
• Keep an eye on smaller children near the edges of the bowls, where skaters come up fast.
• There’s no published opening time. We found no information about fencing or toilets at the park itself.
