Estúdio Lazúli "Mãos no Barro" clay workshop

Estúdio Lazúli is a ceramics studio and arts space in Sintra. It runs clay and painting workshops, rents out its space, fires pieces in its own kiln and has a shop of handmade Portuguese ceramics. For families, three things stand out: a children’s clay workshop called Mãos no Barro (“hands in the clay”), a parent-and-child session, and a Saturday walk-in studio where you can just turn up to paint or model.

Everything is hands-on, a little messy and done sitting down, which makes it a good contrast to a day of climbing towers and walking between palaces in Sintra.

Mãos no Barro is a single 90-minute session for children aged 6 to 12. Each child models a useful piece, such as a small bowl, using the pinch pot technique: you start with a ball of clay and press your thumb into it, then pinch and turn to raise the sides. It’s one of the simplest ways to make a pot by hand.

Then comes the decorating. Children press textures and ornaments into the clay and paint it with engobe (slip), which is clay mixed with water and colour. If there’s time, they can also cut out extra shapes and figures with cutters.

At the end, the pieces stay at the studio. The main piece is fired in the kiln and glazed, and the studio lets you know when it’s ready to collect. All materials, tools, firings and the glaze finish are included.

Mãos no Barro is a group workshop, with a minimum of five children. The studio suggests it for families, school groups, after-school clubs and birthday parties, which also makes it a good fit for a homeschool co-op. Sessions run on weekdays and Saturdays, on a date and time you agree with the studio, in Portuguese or English.

For groups of eight or more children, Estúdio Lazúli can also bring the workshop to you anywhere in the Lisbon area. Prices aren’t published; email info@estudiolazuli.pt for a quote.

The studio’s page doesn’t say whether parents stay or leave during a children’s workshop, so ask when you book if you’re hoping to drop off.

If your children are younger, or you’d like to join in, the Cerâmica Pais & Filhos (parents and children) session is for families making pieces together. Children need to be about four or five years old at least. It’s another 90-minute session using basic hand-modelling techniques and tools, for a minimum of four people, on a date you arrange. Pieces are dried and fired at the studio, and you collect them on an agreed date.

For a quicker, more casual visit, the studio’s Walk In Studio runs on Saturdays from 09:00 to 13:00. You can paint ready-made ceramic pieces or model clay, paying a studio fee plus the cost of the clay or pieces you choose. Paints, glazes and firing are included. The studio says it’s open to individuals, families, children and friends. Booking is by email.

Free ceramic painting (pintura livre) is also available on weekdays by reservation, starting from €12 when checked in September 2026. For groups, the Paint Your Pot session gives each person one or two bisque pieces (already fired once) to paint as they like, taking 90 minutes for one piece or two hours for two, before the studio glazes and fires them.

Four- and five-year-olds do best in the parent-and-child session, where an adult can help. From six to twelve, children can join the Mãos no Barro group on their own terms and come away with a proper, usable piece. Teenagers may want more of a challenge from the studio’s other workshops, such as tile painting or the potter’s wheel. Those pages don’t give a minimum age, so ask first.

Clay and slip get everywhere, so dress children in clothes you don’t mind marking. Remember that you have to come back to collect the finished pieces, since firing takes time. If you’re visiting Sintra from further away, ask the studio about the timing or whether they can post or deliver. For groups, the studio mentions delivery in the Lisbon area depending on quantity.

The studio’s pages don’t cover parking, toilets or step-free access, so ask when you book.

A clay workshop fits neatly around a morning at one of Sintra’s big sights. The Quinta da Regaleira has the famous spiral well and tunnels, and the Convento dos Capuchos is a tiny cork-lined monastery in the woods.
