Plataforma calls itself Portugal’s first magic-themed restaurant, and its look borrows heavily from the Harry Potter books. It opened in Rio de Mouro in February 2024 under the name Plataforma 9 ¾, and a turquoise car like the flying Ford Anglia from Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets is parked by the door.

A wizard in a long cloak meets each group outside and runs through the house rules with some humour: don’t touch the mascots, don’t take home the wands or the cauldrons the drinks come in, and children must not wander about without an adult. Staff are dressed as students of magic, and some guests turn up in robes, pointed hats or round glasses. The restaurant’s own dress code says robes and capes are always welcome, so a child who owns a costume can wear it.

During dinner a magician goes from table to table doing close-up tricks. Time Out’s reviewer watched him make balls disappear, guess cards and draw crosses on people’s palms without them noticing. The wands on the tables also switch the candles on and off, which keeps younger children busy between pizzas.

The restaurant has two dining rooms with different moods, and you choose one when you book.

• The Great Hall (O Grande Salão) upstairs is the one most children picture. Hundreds of candles float above the tables, there are giant trees and golden light, and it seats up to 76. In 2024 Time Out also found a replica of the Gryffindor common room up here, with a fireplace, leather sofas and flying book pages, reached by a stone staircase lined with gilt-framed pictures.
• The Station (A Estação) is below, a smaller, darker room with a lit-up sky and a railway-station feel. It seats up to 37 and the restaurant pitches it as calmer, for small groups and couples. A child who finds a busy room overwhelming may do better here.

The décor changes over time. Time Out noted in 2024 that some official Harry Potter touches, such as the house flags and a life-size elf, had already gone, so expect the spirit of the books rather than a replica film set.

Dinner is a pizza rodízio, meaning the pizzas keep coming round until you say stop. There are ten, served in a fixed order: ham and cheese, margherita, pepperoni, four cheeses, bacon and cheddar, tuna with egg and onion, chicken with catupiry cream cheese, ham and pineapple, caramelised onion with barbecue sauce, and brie with honey and walnuts. A fussy eater can hold out for the first two and ignore the rest. Time Out found the bases dyed blue, green and red.

Every pizza contains gluten and dairy, and the menu lists allergens for each one. Tell the staff about allergies before the rodízio starts.

Drinks cost extra. The children’s options include house mocktails such as Goblin Coin (pineapple, lime and basil) and Dragon Tears (strawberry, mint and raspberry), both made with egg white, plus plain strawberry, passion fruit and lemonade “potions”. The butterbeer is €6 without alcohol and €8 with, and contains lactose. Several drinks are cocktails, so check which glass is which when they arrive. Desserts are extra too.

Each night has something extra, according to the restaurant’s events page when checked in September 2026:

• Owl encounters on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, where you can see the restaurant’s owls up close.
• A potion class on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, in which each guest finds out which house they belong to.
• Quiz nights on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.
• A live orchestra on Saturdays.

If your child is set on the owls, book a weekend.

Getting a table has been the hard part. Time Out waited 224 days for its 2024 booking, when the list ran past nine months, and last-minute cancellations were the main way in at short notice. When we checked in September 2026 the website simply said bookings were open, so look at availability before promising anyone a date.

It is dinner only. Weeknight seatings start at 19:00, 20:00 or 21:00, and at weekends there are two fixed sittings, 19:00 to 21:00 and 21:30 to midnight. The early weekend sitting is the one to choose with young children, and since the next group arrives on time, don’t expect to linger.

Plataforma is in a residential street in Rio de Mouro, in the suburbs of Sintra, well away from the palaces and the historic centre. If you spend the day in old Sintra, Casa Piriquita is the classic stop for pastries before you drive over.

Is Plataforma suitable for young children?

The magic, candles and costumes work best for children of about four and up who are happy at a table for a couple of hours in the evening. Rooms are dim and busy. The Station downstairs is smaller and calmer than the candle hall.

How much does it cost for a family?

The rodízio was €25 per adult and €12.50 per child aged 4 to 10 when checked in September 2026. Drinks and desserts are on top. The website doesn’t say what under-4s pay, so ask when you book.

Are the potion drinks alcohol-free?

Some are and some are not. The mocktails, fruit “potions” and the alcohol-free butterbeer are safe choices; the menu also lists cocktails with similar names.

Is it the official Harry Potter restaurant?

Its website doesn’t present it as an official one. It is a restaurant inspired by the books, and it dropped its original name, Plataforma 9 ¾.
