EVOA (Espaço de Visitação e Observação de Aves)

EVOA stands for Espaço de Visitação e Observação de Aves, which translates as “space for visiting and watching birds”. It sits at Ponta da Erva, on the Lezíria Sul, the flat farmland across the river from Vila Franca de Xira. The Tagus estuary is the most important wetland in Portugal, and EVOA was built on it as a bird refuge: 70 hectares with three freshwater lagoons, hides and an interpretation centre. It is run by the Companhia das Lezírias, a historic farming company that manages 18,000 hectares of land around it, and it lies inside the Tagus Estuary Nature Reserve. It has won a Star Wetland Award from the Ramsar wetlands convention.

For families from Lisbon it is the nearest place to see flamingos up close without a boat or a long drive. It is quiet, flat and open, and the whole point is to sit still and look.

EVOA publishes a season-by-season guide, which helps you choose when to go with children.

• All year: flamingos are the headline. The centre says they are seen daily on the lagoons from April to October. Spoonbills (colhereiro), glossy ibis (íbis-preta) and the purple swamphen (camão), a big blue bird with a red beak, are around year-round, with the swamphen easiest to see from October to February.
• November to February: huge winter flocks arrive from northern Europe to rest on the lagoons. This is the season for thousands of ducks and wading birds at once, plus ospreys and the secretive bittern.
• March, April and August to October: migration seasons, when birds stop off on long journeys. Ruffs, some still in breeding feathers, and several kinds of sandpiper and plover turn up.
• May and June: birds from Africa nest on islands in the lagoons, so children can see chicks being fed. Pied avocets with young, Kentish plovers, purple herons and shelducks with ducklings are on the list.

The lagoons work as a high-tide refuge. When the estuary floods at high tide, many birds leave the mudflats and crowd onto EVOA’s water, so a visit timed near high tide often shows more birds.

There are four hides (observatórios) spread around the lagoons, three photography hides and three extra viewpoints, joined by more than 5 km of trails. Each lagoon has its own character. The Lagoa Principal has islands, deeper and shallower water and mixed plants, so it gathers the widest range of water birds. The Lagoa Rasa (the shallow lagoon) is where wading birds probe the mud with long beaks. The Lagoa Grande tends to hold big groups of ducks and geese.

Inside a hide, children sit on a bench and look through a long slot in the wooden wall. The birds cannot see you, which is the lesson in itself: talking in whispers and moving slowly means the flamingos stay put.

The easiest way in with children is the daily guided visit, which lasts 90 minutes and takes up to 15 people. You choose between two versions.

On foot, the walk covers up to 3 km. Along the way the guide points out animal tracks, insects and saltmarsh plants that you can touch and even taste, then takes you into the hides overlooking the main and shallow lagoons to identify birds and tell their stories. EVOA recommends the walking version from October to March, when it is cooler.

By electric car, you visit all three lagoons and go further out to the estuary, the saltmarsh and the mouth of the Sorraia river at Ponta d’Erva. EVOA suggests this for families with someone who has limited mobility, and it is a good choice with small children in hot weather. It costs €5 extra per person.

When checked in September 2026, the published prices were €32 for an adult, €20 for a child aged 7 to 12 and €80 for a family pack if you pay on the day. Booking at least 24 hours ahead halves those prices, to €16, €10 and €40. The family pack covers up to five people with no more than two adults, and each extra young person is €8. Residents of Vila Franca de Xira or Benavente and members of some conservation groups get a further discount on advance bookings. At weekends a single person can book; on weekdays there is a minimum spend of €80.

Daily slots run 9:30, 11:30 and 15:30 from March to October (a 14:00 slot is only on request), and 10:00, 11:30, 14:00 and 15:30 from November to February.

The interpretation centre holds an exhibition called EVOA nas Asas do Tejo (“EVOA on the wings of the Tagus”), which cost €4.10 when checked. It has 20 interactive modules built around choices a bird has to make: where to nest, what to eat, how farming, towns and a changing climate affect its route. Projections show the estuary’s habitats through the seasons, with real recorded sounds of the marsh. Visitors are asked to decide as if they were a bird and see what happens. EVOA suggests allowing 60 to 90 minutes. It is the indoor fallback if the weather turns, and it gives school-age children the “why” behind what they have just seen from the hides.

EVOA runs nature birthday parties for 10 to 30 guests, from €13 per person when checked. Themes include a session in the immersive exhibition where children walk in mud, follow the tides and sort species like the naturalist Linnaeus; “Biólogo por um dia” (biologist for a day), where children learn birds by sound and sight, measure and photograph animal tracks and take home a filled-in field guide; and a nature art party. An augmented-reality mission party is for over-12s.

Its holiday programme, Férias na Natureza, is a week of birdwatching, field diaries and water games on the Companhia das Lezírias estate, split into groups from age 4 to over 12. When checked, the Portuguese page said it was offered to organised groups of at least ten (companies, schools, associations or groups of friends), so a single family cannot book a place on its own. Ask if you can gather a group.

The site is exposed, flat and mostly unshaded, and the Lezíria gets hot in summer. Bring hats, water and sun cream. Binoculars make a huge difference for children; bring a pair if you have one.

Birds are the only show here. There is no playground, and a child who needs to run and shout will be frustrated in a hide. Ages about five and up tend to get the most from it; the guided price structure starts at age 7, so ask when you book how younger children are charged. Toddlers can come along but may not manage the quiet.

You can also visit the lagoons without a guide: EVOA’s hides page says self-guided access runs from 9:00 to 17:30 (March to October) or 10:00 to 16:00 (November to February), even without booking, and recommends calling ahead. Only adult and senior prices were listed for this, so check the child rate. Reviews quoted on the official site mention coffee and pastries at the centre, but EVOA does not list a café, so pack a picnic.

Across the river and a short way south, Museu do Ar in Alverca suits aeroplane fans. If your child likes estuary wildlife, the Sado dolphin trips from Setúbal are another way to meet it and the Oceanário in Lisbon is a good rainy-day follow-up for children who want more of the estuary’s wildlife. Near Porto, the Parque Biológico de Gaia is another place to watch birds.

Will we definitely see flamingos at EVOA?

Nothing is guaranteed with wild birds, but EVOA says flamingos are seen daily on the lagoons from April to October. They are present year-round in the estuary but do not nest here.

Is EVOA good for toddlers?

It suits children who can sit quietly for a few minutes at a time. The electric-car tour makes it easier for small children, but there is no play area and little shade, so most families find it works best from about five upwards.

Do you need to book?

Can you take a buggy or wheelchair?

EVOA recommends the electric-car tour for anyone with limited mobility, and it covers all three lagoons. The walking trails run through saltmarsh and lagoon edges, so ask when you book whether your buggy will cope.

How long does a visit take?

The guided visit is 90 minutes. Add an hour or more if you want the exhibition, so plan for a half-day.
