Parque Urbano da Costa da Caparica

Costa da Caparica is where Lisbon goes to the beach, and most families come for the sand and the Atlantic surf. The Parque Urbano da Costa da Caparica (Costa da Caparica Urban Park) is a 14-hectare park on the Avenida Afonso de Albuquerque, running along the beach itself. The council describes it as a place that mixes play, sport, picnics, places to eat and an environmental centre, all with the smell of the sea.

For parents, it solves a familiar beach-day problem. When children have had enough sun and sand, or the wind picks up, there is a big grassy park with climbing and bouncing a short walk from your towel.

The council and the parish council both say the park has three separate children’s play areas (espaços de recreio infantil). One of the council’s pages describes them as two playgrounds and a youth space. As well as the usual equipment, the youth space has:

• trampolines
• climbing rocks
• a zip line (called a slide in Portuguese)
• roundabouts made from ropes and tyres

That mix means younger and older children can each have their own area. Toddlers can stay with the more traditional playground equipment while older siblings take turns on the zip line and the trampolines.

Beyond the play areas, the park has wide lawns, open-air amphitheatres and a picnic area, so you can spread out and eat your own food. For sporty families there are three tennis courts and a multi-sport court (polidesportivo). There is bike parking, and the flat seafront location makes it easy to arrive on bikes or scooters.

The council says there are two restaurants inside the park. That is useful on a beach day, when you want lunch at a table and a toilet stop without packing everything up.

Next to the park is the Centro de Monitorização e Interpretação Ambiental (CMIA), an environmental monitoring and interpretation centre set up to raise awareness about the local environment. Its opening times and activities weren’t listed on the park’s pages when we checked, so contact the council before planning a visit around it.

• Toddlers get the traditional playground equipment and plenty of grass to toddle on.
• Children of 4 to 7 can bounce on the trampolines, try the lower climbing rocks and ride the rope-and-tyre roundabouts.
• Children of 8 to 12 will head for the zip line and the climbing rocks, and may want a game of tennis or football on the courts.

The park is free. The council’s listing shows daily opening and asks visitors to phone ahead in August. Bring sun cream and water in summer, as the play areas are close to the beach and the sun is strong. Sand gets everywhere, so shake out shoes before the trampolines.

Costa da Caparica is a popular beach, so summer weekends are busy. A weekday or an out-of-season visit is calmer.

The council doesn’t give a detailed list of the equipment in each play area, or say whether any of it is inclusive or fenced. On a windy day, the seafront can be blustery. At the height of summer, expect crowds.

At the southern end of the Costa da Caparica beaches, Tiago Pires Kids Surf Camp runs surf days for children at Fonte da Telha. On a wet day, head inland to Quantum Park Almada for trampolines and a ninja course, or the Piscina Municipal da Charneca de Caparica for a swim. Young skaters can try the Almada skate park in the Parque da Juventude.
