Passadiços do Paiva and 516 Arouca bridge

The Passadiços do Paiva (Paiva walkways) are a wooden boardwalk that runs for 8.7 km along the left bank of the River Paiva in Arouca, in Aveiro district. The route links the river beaches of Areinho and Espiunca, with a third beach at Vau in the middle, and passes rapids, quartz crystals and plants the council describes as endangered in Europe. High above the same valley hangs the 516 Arouca bridge, one of the longest pedestrian suspension bridges in the world.

You can do either one or both. The walkways suit strong walkers of any age from about eight who can manage steep stairs. The bridge is for children aged 6 and over who like a wobble, and its ticket includes the walkways on the same day.

The whole valley is part of the Arouca UNESCO Global Geopark, and five marked geosites sit along the route: the Paiva gorge, the Aguieiras waterfall, the Vau river beach, the Gola do Salto and the Espiunca fault, where you can see how the rocks have cracked and shifted. Look out for glittering quartz in the rock faces.

The boardwalk climbs and drops along the valley side, often on long wooden staircases, with three short stretches of dirt path. Much of the route is shaded, and there are emergency phones along the way.

In summer the river beaches are the reward. The official site describes all three beaches as places to swim, and the FAQ points to the bathing area at Areinho to cool off.

The bridge is 516 metres long and 1.2 metres wide, strung 175 metres above the Paiva on steel cables. You walk on 127 metal-grid panels that you can see straight through, and the whole thing moves as people cross. The rules even warn you not to put your hands in the joins between panels, so you don’t get pinched as it sways.

Crossings are guided and take about an hour, with fixed slots through the day: seven from May to September, six in April and October and four from November to March. You meet at Areinho or Alvarenga 15 minutes before your slot; after 15 minutes late you won’t be let on.

The bridge is closed to children under 6, and the rules ask parents to make sure the crossing won’t make their child anxious. Think honestly about that before you book. A child who freezes halfway across a see-through bridge 175 metres up can’t easily turn back.

When we checked in September 2026, walkway tickets cost between €0 and €2. Children under 10 walk free with their parents, and paid tickets start at 10. The price depends on the season, with high season from April to October and low season from November to March.

Bridge tickets cost €7.50 to €12 depending on age (child, youth, student, senior or adult), and family packs were on sale. The bridge ticket includes the walkways on the same day. If you pick the last bridge slot of the day, you have to walk the passadiços before the bridge.

Book ahead, especially for summer weekends. The ticket site runs on timed entry, and both attractions have strict rebooking rules: rebooking the walkways costs 50% of the ticket, and the bridge charges 25% to rebook or keeps 50% on cancellation. If the bridge shuts for weather, you can rebook free or claim a full refund within ten working days.

The walkways open every day except 25 December. In April and October they run 09:00 to 19:00 (last entry 16:00), from May to September 08:00 to 20:00 (last entry 17:00), and from November to March 09:00 to 17:00 (last entry 15:00). The rules also say to walk only between sunrise and sunset.

When we checked, the Espiunca entrance was temporarily closed and only the stretch from Areinho to Vau was open. You could leave at Vau by taxi or jeep, but not start there. Check the ticket site before you set off, because this changes how long the walk is and how you get back.

This is a hard walk. The official site grades it high difficulty with steep climbs and descents, and a one-way walk of the full route takes about two and a half hours. It’s linear, so plan how to get back: taxis wait at both ends. Starting at Areinho and walking towards Espiunca is the easier direction. If you are doing it there and back, the council suggests starting at Espiunca.

Buggies are not allowed on either the walkways or the bridge, and the walkways are not wheelchair accessible. Bikes, music players, camping and fires are banned. The July 2026 walkway rules allow dogs on a lead or in a carrier bag, although the older FAQ still says no dogs, so check if you plan to bring one. Pets are never allowed on the bridge, and neither are umbrellas, food, drones or bags bigger than 40 x 20 x 25 cm.

Bring water, food, sun cream, a bag for rubbish and proper shoes; flip-flops and heels are not allowed on the bridge. Don’t drink from the fountains along the route, which the rules say are not drinking water. The bridge can close in strong wind (gusts over 40 km/h), heavy rain, thunderstorms and high fire risk.

There are toilets at both entrances and at the Vau recreation area in the middle, cafés with quick meals at each end, and picnic areas. Parking is free at both ends but unguarded.

Arouca’s geology continues at the Museu das Trilobites in Canelas, where trilobite fossils the size of a tea tray come from a working slate quarry. For a gentler rainy-day stop in the same district, the Museu do Papel shows paper being made in two old mills. South of Arouca, the Bioparque de São Pedro do Sul has treetop courses and a mountain-water pool.

What is the minimum age for the 516 Arouca bridge?

Six. Children under 6 are not allowed on the bridge, and the rules ask parents to be sure the crossing won’t upset their child.

Are the Passadiços do Paiva free for children?

Yes for under-10s, who walk free with their parents. From 10, tickets cost up to €2 when we checked.

Can you take a buggy on the Passadiços do Paiva?

No. Buggies are banned on both the walkways and the bridge because of the stairs and terrain. Bring a carrier for any child who can’t walk the distance.

How long does the walk take?

About two and a half hours one way for the full 8.7 km. When we checked, only the Areinho to Vau section was open, which is shorter.

Which direction is easier?

Areinho to Espiunca is the less tiring direction. For a there-and-back walk, the council suggests starting at Espiunca, but that entrance was closed when we checked.

Can you swim in the river?

In summer, yes, at the river beaches along the route. The official FAQ points to the bathing area at Areinho.
