Piscina Municipal das Palmeiras

The Piscina Municipal das Palmeiras opened in 2001 on Avenida Independência das Colónias in Setúbal. The council lists it as owned and managed by Setúbal council together with the Clube Naval Setubalense, a local club. The council describes it as a pool for learning, competition and recreation.

For families it’s mainly a lessons pool. It has a separate learner pool, runs baby classes and a full swimming school, and hosts competitive swimming. The price list only has recreational swimming entries for over-14s, so it isn’t the place for a casual family splash. For that, look at the council’s pool in Azeitão, which sells recreational entries for children, or the outdoor Manteigadas pools in summer.

There are changing rooms, covered spectator seating, a first-aid room, and toilets for athletes and the public. Depths aren’t published.

The council lists these activities: baby swimming, recreational swimming, competitive swimming and aqua aerobics.

One-off charges: registration €20.79 a year (including the card), renewal €9.47, replacement card €5.72, compulsory insurance €5.65.

Water confidence (adaptação ao meio aquático, AMA) is the first step for young children who aren’t yet at ease in the water. After that come the learning levels AP1 and AP2 and then improvement (aperfeiçoamento). The pré-desportiva class prepares children for competitive swimming.

The weekend option helps working parents: a child can do two classes a week, on Saturday and Sunday, for the same price as three weekday classes.

Recreational swimming on the price list: over-14s pay €3.20 with a user card or €5.04 without; over-65s the same.

The council page doesn’t publish the class timetable. Ask at the pool, or phone the council’s sports line, for class times and waiting lists.

The council doesn’t post the Palmeiras rules online. Setúbal’s other indoor municipal pool, at Azeitão, requires a swim cap and suitable footwear on the pool deck, and most families will want to bring a cap and flip-flops here too. Check the rules at registration.

On a fine day, Sado dolphin-watching trips leave from Setúbal’s riverfront, and the Tróia ferry crosses the Sado to the beaches on the other side.

Is there a learner pool?

Yes. Besides the 25-metre pool there’s a 12 by 8 metre learner and recreational pool.

Can children swim there without a class?

The 2026 price list only has recreational entries for over-14s and over-65s. Ask the pool whether younger children can come with a parent; otherwise try the Azeitão pool.

Are there weekend classes?

Yes. Water-confidence and children’s classes can be taken on both Saturday and Sunday for €36.53 a month.

Is it open in August?

No. The pool closes for the whole of August.
