Piscina Municipal de Amora

The Piscina Municipal de Amora is one of three indoor pools run by Seixal council, alongside the pools at Corroios and Aldeia de Paio Pires. It sits on Rua Domingos Bomtempo in Cruz de Pau, in the parish of Amora, and it’s the one of the three with a proper toddler pool. That makes it the obvious choice in Seixal if you have a baby or a small child who isn’t ready for deep water.

It’s a plain council sports pool with no slides or flumes. What it does offer is a warm indoor pool open seven days a week from September to July, a long list of free-swim slots, and lessons for every age from six months up.

According to the council’s facility page:

• The main pool is 25 metres long and 12.5 metres wide, with six lanes. The depth runs from 90 centimetres at the shallow end to 2 metres.
• The toddler pool (the council calls it a piscina infantil or chapinheiro, a paddling pool) is about 7 metres long and 45 to 60 centimetres deep. That’s shallow enough for a toddler to stand.

The building has three floors: plant rooms below, the pools and changing rooms on the ground floor, and a 250-seat spectator stand upstairs with its own toilets. There’s a first-aid room, a waiting room and a reception desk. The bar was listed as temporarily unavailable when we checked, so bring a snack and water for afterwards.

The pool has two sets of changing rooms for men and women and a third set for children with their parents or carers, which helps a lot if you’re one adult with children of different sexes.

Seixal’s timetables call public swimming utilização livre. At Amora the 2026/27 timetable lists free-swim sessions for over-6s, with a set number of places (vagas) in each slot:

• Weekdays: sessions from 7:55 through to 21:20, mostly with 9 or 18 places. The 13:00 session on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays has 45 places, and the 12:00 session has 45 on Tuesdays and 63 on Thursdays.
• Saturday: from 7:55 to 17:45. The early-afternoon sessions at 13:00, 13:40 and 14:20 each have 63 places, so the whole pool is open to the public.
• Sunday: from 7:55 to about 12:45, with 9 to 18 places a session.

With only 9 places in many slots, it’s worth asking at reception how to reserve.

Monthly fees paid late carry a small surcharge that rises each day, from €1.33 on the first day to €1.88 from the fifth. Users are covered by the pool’s personal-accident insurance.

Babies (6 to 36 months) have classes at weekends only. The timetable splits them into two groups:

• 6 to 18 months: Saturday at 10:10, 11:00 and 17:10; Sunday at 9:45, 10:35 and 11:25
• 18 to 36 months: Saturday at 9:20, 9:45, 10:35, 11:25, 16:20 and 16:45; Sunday at 9:20, 10:10 and 11:00

Water confidence for ages 3 to 5 (adaptação ao meio aquático) runs on weekday afternoons from 16:20 to 19:10, on Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 10:00, and on Saturday and Sunday mornings from 8:35 to 12:05.

Ages 6 to 12 can start with water confidence, then move up through levels 1, 2 and 3. Classes run on weekday afternoons (16:20 to 18:30) and weekend mornings. There’s also adapted swimming (natação adaptada) for children with disabilities: under-13s on Tuesday and Thursday at 15:40 and Saturday at 15:00.

The pool’s published rules say:

• You need a lycra swimsuit, a swim cap and flip-flops to go on the pool deck.
• No jewellery, other objects or make-up in the water.
• Everyone walks through the footbath and showers properly before getting in.
• You can go into the changing rooms only 10 minutes before your session starts.
• Children up to age 9 go into the changing room with one adult only. From 10, children use the changing room for their own sex, on their own.
• Valuables go in the lockers in the changing rooms, locked with your own padlock.

The pool can close for works, staff training, sports events, public holidays and the municipal holiday, and it closes for the whole of August.

• Free swimming is listed for over-6s. Younger children use the water in baby and water-confidence classes; ask at reception whether they can join a parent in a free-swim session.
• Many free-swim slots have only 9 places, so book ahead for busy times.
• The bar was closed when we checked.
• When the pool shuts in August, the nearest ocean beaches are on the Costa da Caparica in neighbouring Almada, where Tiago Pires Kids Surf Camp runs lessons at Fonte da Telha.

For a dry-land outing in Seixal, children who like engines can try BA Motopark in Foros da Catrapona.

Is there a baby pool at Amora?

Yes. Alongside the 25-metre pool there’s a separate toddler pool about 7 metres long and 45 to 60 centimetres deep.

From what age can babies have lessons?

From 6 months. Baby classes (6 to 36 months) run on Saturday and Sunday mornings, with a few Saturday afternoon sessions, and cost from €22.09 a month for Seixal residents.

Do children need a swim cap?

Yes. A lycra swimsuit, a swim cap and flip-flops are compulsory for everyone on the pool deck.

How much is a swim?

€2.34 for a 6 to 12-year-old who lives in Seixal and €3.08 for over-13s, on the 2026 price list. You pay a one-off registration first (€17.51 for a child resident).

Is it open in August?

No. The Amora pool closes for the whole of August.
