Piscina Municipal de Santa Clara

The Piscina Municipal de Santa Clara is one of Lisbon’s municipal pools, on Rua Professor Adelino Palma Carlos in the Santa Clara parish, the city’s most northerly corner around Ameixoeira and Charneca. The building belongs to the city and the Junta de Freguesia de Santa Clara (the parish council) runs it. It’s a working local pool with lanes, lessons and people swimming lengths before work. There are no slides or wave machine.

Families mostly come here for two things: the swimming school, which starts with babies from 12 months, and a handful of weekly slots when children can splash about in the learner pool with a parent. Parish residents pay a fraction of the normal price, which makes it one of the cheaper indoor swims in the city if you live nearby.

The parish council’s pool page gives the technical details:

• Competition pool (tanque de competição): 25 m by 12.5 m, six lanes, 1.20 m deep at the shallow end and 1.60 m at the deep end, with a hydraulic lift for swimmers who can’t manage the steps.
• Learner pool (tanque de aprendizagem): 12.5 m by 8 m, three lanes, 1.05 to 1.20 m deep, with a ramp into the water.

That learner pool is deeper than many. At 1.05 metres the water comes up to the shoulders of a typical five-year-old, so toddlers and non-swimmers need to be held or use armbands, and little ones won’t be able to stand on their own. The main pool is out of their depth altogether.

Public swimming is called utilização livre, meaning you come in and swim without a teacher. Santa Clara splits it into two kinds. Sporting free swim (desportiva) is for people who can swim 25 metres without stopping, and you’re tested the first time. Recreational free swim (recreativa) needs no swimming ability at all, so it’s the one for families, but it only runs at set times.

On the 2026/27 timetable, the only slots marked for adults and children together are in the learner pool:

• Monday to Friday at 13:15 and 14:00, with one lane free
• Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday at 15:00, with all three lanes free
• Saturday at 13:00 and 14:00, with all three lanes free

The rest of the week’s free-swim lanes, mostly in the big pool, are for adults only. Saturdays at 13:00 and 14:00 are the best bet: the whole learner pool is open to families and the big pool has all six lanes free for adults. The pool is closed on Sundays. The parish council says the timetable can change without notice when lanes are booked, so ring ahead before a special trip.

Each visit gives you 90 minutes between going through the turnstile and coming back out, including changing time. Stay longer and you’re charged for a second session.

The price list in force from 1 September 2026 charges per hour of public swimming. Residents (people registered in Santa Clara parish, with proof of address or voter registration) pay much less:

• Up to 17, or with a Cartão Jovem youth card: €3.50 on weekdays before 17:00 and €4.00 after 17:00 and on Saturdays. Residents pay €1.25 and €1.75.
• Adults 18 to 64: €4.00 and €4.50. Residents €1.75 and €2.25.
• 65 and over: €3.30 and €3.70. Residents €1.15 and €1.50.

On weekdays, anyone going in from 16:00 onwards pays the after-17:00 price. You also need an access card, which costs €5.80. There’s a monthly free-swim pass too, €20 for under-18s (€15.30 for residents) and €26 for adults.

The 2026/27 lesson timetable has classes almost every weekday afternoon and on Saturday mornings:

• Babies, 12 to 36 months: 30-minute slots on Saturday mornings from 8:00 to 11:30, and at 16:30 and 17:00 on weekday afternoons.
• Ages 4 and 5: Saturday mornings from 8:00 to 12:00 and weekday afternoons from 16:30 to 20:00. These are for children who haven’t learned anything in the water yet.
• Ages 6 to 12: Saturday mornings from 8:00 to 12:00 and weekday evenings from 17:30 to 20:00.
• From 13: adult swimming classes, from 8:00 in the morning.

Children aged 6 and over are placed in one of five levels, from Level I (some confidence in the water) up to Level IV (front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke, now learning butterfly). The assessment sheet the pool uses separates each level into age groups of 6 to 7, 8 to 12 and 13 and over.

Monthly fees for children aged 4 to 17 are €17.50 for one class a week, €24.50 for two and €29 for three (residents €13, €19 and €22.50). Baby classes cost €19.50 a month for one a week and €27.50 for two (residents €14.50 and €21.50). Registration costs €25 including the card, and renewal each year costs €18. You can sign up at any point in the year at reception, on weekdays from 7:30 to 21:30 and on Saturdays until 15:00.

The draft fees table published for public consultation in April 2026 also lists holiday sports programmes (Programas de Férias Desportivas) priced per week, with discounts for siblings and for children who don’t need lunch. The pool page doesn’t give dates, ages or times for them, so ask at reception if you’re after a school-holiday option.

The pool runs swimming parties on Saturdays from 13:00 to 16:00 for children aged 4 to 12. Children use the learner pool for an hour, then have tea in the sports room and on the terrace. It costs €150 for up to 15 children (€132 for residents) or €180 for up to 30 (€152), and the price doesn’t include an entertainer. A pool entertainer costs €40 an hour extra. Bookings go by email to the technical director.

The swimwear poster on the parish council’s page is strict. Everyone needs a swim cap (touca) and flip-flops (chinelos). Girls and women wear a one-piece swimsuit, and boys and men wear tight lycra trunks or briefs. Bikinis and long fabric board shorts are banned. Caps are on sale at the pool.

The new pool regulations were put to public consultation in April 2026. The draft includes these rules:

• No babies under 12 months in the water.
• Children under 12 in recreational free swim need an adult responsible for watching them. If not, a parent must sign a form in person at the pool.
• Shower fully and walk through the footbath before going on to the poolside.
• Only one adult can go into the changing room with each child. Children up to 10 use the children’s changing rooms, or the changing room of the adult with them if that adult is swimming too.
• Showers are limited to five minutes.
• No phones except in signed areas, and no creams, oils or make-up in the water.

These may change when the final version is approved, so check the pool’s rules at reception.

This is a small neighbourhood pool, and weekday mornings and evenings belong to lessons and lap swimmers. Families wanting a relaxed splash have a handful of learner-pool slots a week, and none on Sundays. The learner pool’s 1.05 m minimum depth also makes it harder for very young children than a pool with a shallow end.

The pool page doesn’t mention a car park or say what public transport serves it. Check a journey planner before you go.

In Carnide, a short drive south-west, Espassus Piscina is Carnide parish’s outdoor summer pool with a separate children’s pool, and the Armazém Aério circus school teaches trapeze and aerial silks to children from six. Just over the city boundary, the Piscina Municipal de Odivelas and the Santo António dos Cavaleiros pool are other indoor options. In the west of the city, the Piscina do Restelo has a shallower learner pool with Sunday family slots.
