Portinho da Arrábida and Creiro beach

Portinho da Arrábida is a small bay where the Serra da Arrábida drops straight into the sea, and the hills protect it. The sand is white, and the water is clear enough to see the bottom, which is a novelty for children used to the grey rollers of the west coast. Just offshore is the Pedra da Anicha, a little rocky islet. Portinho and the neighbouring Praia do Creiro were voted one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Portugal in 2010.

The sea here is part of a marine protected area, and VisitPortugal notes that fishing is banned because the seabed is protected. The shallows and rocks are good for looking at small fish, and the bay is known for diving. On the headland is the Forte de Santa Maria, which houses an oceanographic museum run by the natural park. Its opening hours are limited, so check before you go if you’d like to include it.

The big thing to plan is getting there in summer. Setúbal council runs Arrábida Sem Carros, which restricts cars on the coast road during the bathing season. In 2026 it ran from 4 June to 15 September, 07:00 to 20:00. Cars could reach Portinho and Creiro only while there was parking, and the road closed once the car parks were full. The simplest option with children is to park free at Azeitão market and take the bus, or pay for the Creiro car park and use the free shuttle. Arrive early, as VisitSetubal suggests coming before 10:00 or after 17:00 in peak season.

Lifeguards, a beach bar and toilets operate during the bathing season, which the government set as 4 June to 15 September for Portinho in 2026. Bring your own shade for the sand. The beaches can get very busy on summer weekends. Outside the season the road is open, but services are fewer.

The council’s Arrábida Sem Carros page sets out the 2026 buses. Line 4470 runs from Setúbal’s transport interchange (ITS) to Praia do Creiro by way of Vila Nogueira de Azeitão, because the council says a bus link between Figueirinha and Creiro isn’t possible. In 2026 it ran at weekends in June (from the 4th), every day from 29 June to 13 September, and then at weekends and on public holidays. There were 10 buses each way a day, and the full trip takes about an hour.

You pay the normal fare on board, and the Navegante travel pass covers it. When we checked, the council gave an occasional single as €2.60 bought on board or €1.55 prepaid on a Viva Viagem card. The council’s municipal Navegante pass is free for young people up to 23.

There are three free places to leave the car for the bus:

• Várzea, Setúbal: more than 100 spaces by the Várzea bus terminal on Rua Eng. Henrique Cabeçadas, with a footpath straight to the stops for line 4470 and line 4474 (the Figueirinha bus).
• Azeitão market: about 200 spaces by the monthly market ground, with the 4470 stop by the skate park on the EN10.
• Alegro shopping centre: the start of line 4474 to Figueirinha, not Portinho.

The Creiro car park, run by the Associação Baía de Setúbal, has about 140 spaces and charged €5 for the day or €3 from 13:00 in 2026. Line 4477 shuttles between it and the Creiro, Portinho and Galapos beaches.

For families with a disabled blue badge, the council kept 1 free accessible space at Portinho and 5 at Creiro in 2026. Tell the staff at the barrier you need one and they’ll say whether it’s free.

Praia da Figueirinha, nearer Setúbal, has a sandbank at low tide and its own direct bus. Praia de Galapos, just east of Creiro, is a narrow beach under the cliffs reached by stairs, so it suits children who can manage steps.
