Portugal Helicopters flies private sightseeing trips (passeios de helicóptero) from the heliport on the Algés waterfront, at the western end of Lisbon’s riverside. Children can fly from the age of two, with an adult. For a child who stops to watch every helicopter overhead, sitting in one as it lifts off the pad and tips towards the river is hard to beat.

The shortest routes take in the monuments of Belém: Belém Tower, the Jerónimos Monastery, the Padrão dos Descobrimentos, the 25 de Abril bridge and the Cristo Rei statue across the river. Longer routes follow the coast to Cascais and Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of mainland Europe, and inland over the Sintra hills and the Pena Palace. Seeing places they have walked round as a map from above is a geography lesson children remember.

This is expensive, and it is priced per flight, not per person. All flights are private: your group has the helicopter to itself. When checked in September 2026, the website listed these flights in the Robinson R44, which takes one to three passengers with a combined weight of up to 235 kg:

• Belém: €291.62. Champalimaud Foundation, Belém Tower, Jerónimos, Praça do Império, the Padrão dos Descobrimentos, MAAT, the 25 de Abril bridge and Cristo Rei.
• Descobrimentos: €412.08. The Belém route plus the mouth of the Tagus, the Caparica beaches and the Bugio lighthouse.
• Estoril and Cascais: €545.21. The coast from Fort São Julião and Carcavelos to Estoril, Cascais and its marina.
• Sintra: €808.30. The Estádio Nacional, Queluz Palace, Sintra town, the Moorish Castle, the Pena Palace and Quinta da Regaleira.
• Cascais and Cabo da Roca: €808.30. The Cascais coast on to Boca do Inferno, Guincho beach and Cabo da Roca.
• Cabo da Roca and Sintra: €1,236.23. The coast to Cabo da Roca, then Monserrate, Sintra and Queluz.

These R44 flights last from 10 to 45 minutes, depending on the route.

A family of four or more needs a bigger helicopter. The Airbus AS350 takes four or five passengers, with flights from €919.24. The Airbus EC130 takes up to six, from €1,130.57. These larger-helicopter flights last from 20 to 60 minutes. Their pages give the Cascais Municipal Aerodrome passenger terminal as the meeting point, so check where your flight leaves from when you book.

The company’s FAQ says children can fly from age two, accompanied by an adult. There is a weight limit of 125 kg per passenger, plus a limit for the whole group, and staff confirm the weights you gave at check-in, discreetly.

Everyone needs official photo ID, which the company says is required for security. Check what they accept for a young child when you book. Backpacks and bags are left at reception; on board you take only essentials and a phone for photos. You can photograph and film throughout.

Arrive about 20 minutes before your flight to check in at the Algés heliport. There is parking in front. Anyone not flying, such as a grandparent or a sibling too young or too nervous to go, can wait at the heliport and watch the take-off and landing.

Helicopters are loud inside and out. A child who hates noise may find it frightening, even with the thrill of flying. Motion-sensitive children may also struggle on the longer routes.

If the weather isn’t safe, the company reschedules at no cost or refunds you. Air traffic control or weather can change a route or delay a flight, and the company says it will let you know. You can cancel free of charge up to 48 hours before; after that there is no refund. Flight videos, hotel pick-ups and transfers are not included.

The Algés heliport is at the Belém end of Lisbon’s riverside, so you can fly over the monuments and then visit them on foot. The Museu de Marinha, the Museu Nacional dos Coches and Central Tejo at MAAT are all a short way east.
