Praia da Conceição and Praia da Duquesa

Praia da Conceição and Praia da Duquesa sit side by side in the centre of Cascais, divided only by an old summer villa, the Chalet Faial. Cascais Ambiente, the council’s environment company, describes Conceição as joined to Duquesa, and on a busy day they feel like one long curve of sand. Conceição runs about 110 metres from the Hotel Albatroz to the Chalet Faial and is named after the chapel of Nossa Senhora da Conceição next to it. Duquesa, about 170 metres long, carries on to the Chalet Palmela.

For families with small children, this is one of the easiest beach days near Lisbon. The train ends at Cascais station a short walk away, and cafés and toilets are right there. The council calls Conceição one of the busiest beaches in town because it’s so easy to reach.

Conceição marks the start of the paredão, the seafront promenade that runs for about 3 km past Estoril to Praia da Azarujinha in São João do Estoril. It’s flat and good for a buggy or a scooter, and you can walk it in stages: past the ocean pool at Moitas to Praia do Tamariz and its free seawater pool, then on to Praia da Poça, and catch the train back from Estoril or São João.

The council lists water sports at both beaches. Duquesa has the most going on: pedalo hire (gaivotas in Portuguese), pleasure boat hire, water skiing and a diving school. A pedalo ride round the bay is a simple treat for children who aren’t swimming yet. Prices weren’t published on the council pages, so ask at the beach.

In 2026 the Cascais bathing season ran from 1 May to 30 September, and both beaches were lifeguarded and flagged. The council’s lifeguard page lists Conceição and Duquesa among the six Cascais beaches that also have lifeguards from the Bravehart association all year round, and gives summer hours of 09:00 to 19:00.

Neither beach flies the Blue Flag. The Portuguese Environment Agency (APA) rates Conceição’s water “good” and Duquesa’s “acceptable” (the lowest passing grade), and the latest analyses for both were marked suitable when we checked in September 2026. It’s worth checking the APA’s info água site or the notice at the beach before a swim after heavy rain.

Conceição holds the “Praia Acessível, Praia para Todos” (accessible beach for everyone) award, one of three in Cascais in 2026 alongside Carcavelos and Tamariz. Access to the sand is by stairs and a ramp. Trained Maré Viva volunteers help people with reduced mobility into the sea on an amphibious chair (a Tiralô), which schools and care institutions can also book by email, and the council lends a children’s beach wheelchair free of charge at the beach information post. Duquesa also has step and ramp access.

Both beaches have toilets and a first-aid post; the council lists showers at Conceição. Restaurants, bars and terraces line the promenade above the sand, and central Cascais is full of places to eat. Santini is the classic ice cream stop, and Trem Velho, a steakhouse in an old train by the station, is handy for a quick meal before the ride home.

Parts of both beaches are concessioned, meaning licensed operators rent out sunbeds and umbrellas. There is little shade otherwise. The council lists a car park at Duquesa, but parking in the centre of Cascais is tight on summer weekends and the train is simpler.

These are small town beaches and they fill up on hot weekends in July and August, when there isn’t much room between towels. Jellyfish can appear on this coast; Cascais Ambiente advises rinsing a sting with seawater without rubbing and removing any tentacles with tweezers. Dogs aren’t allowed on the sand from 1 May to 30 September.

Next door, tiny Praia da Rainha is a calm-water cove reached down steps. Parque Marechal Carmona, with its peacocks, playground and café, is a shady break from the sun in the centre of town.

Is Praia da Conceição good for toddlers?

It’s one of the easiest options near Lisbon: lifeguards, toilets and cafés close by and a train station a short walk away. As on any beach, stay close to them at the water’s edge.

Can you take a buggy?

The promenade is flat and easy with a buggy. Both beaches have ramp access as well as steps, though pushing a buggy across soft sand is hard work.

Are dogs allowed?

Not from 1 May to 30 September. From October to April dogs are allowed on a lead.
