Praia da Tocha

Praia da Tocha is a small beach village on the long, straight sandy coast between Praia de Mira and Figueira da Foz, in the municipality of Cantanhede. Cantanhede council describes it as an old fishing village where you can still see the palheiros: wooden huts on stilts that fishermen used to store their gear during the summer fishing months. Many have been restored as holiday homes, and the council says the village grew in the 1960s beach boom without losing its look.

It’s a calmer place than the bigger resorts nearby, which suits families with small children or anyone who finds crowds hard work.

The Agência Portuguesa do Ambiente (APA) describes Tocha as a beach of fine white sand on an exposed Atlantic coast, facing an energetic, abrasive ocean. So expect real waves, a steady breeze and cold water. The wide sand is the main attraction for small children: room to dig, run and fly a kite, with the sea to jump in and out of at the edge while an adult stays close.

Confident older swimmers can enjoy the waves, but only inside the zone the lifeguards mark with flags.

In 2026 the bathing season ran from 13 June to 13 September, with lifeguards on duty. Flags follow the national system: green for swimming allowed, yellow for take care and don’t swim, red for don’t go in, and chequered for no lifeguard on duty. The APA classifies the water as Excellent.

Just to the north is Palheirão, a stretch of beach the APA lists as a bathing water but without lifeguards or facilities. It’s quiet and wild, and best kept for walks rather than swimming with children.

On 25 June 2026 Praia da Tocha raised its Blue Flag for the 36th year in a row. Three other flags went up alongside it: the Praia Acessível flag from the national rehabilitation institute, for access for people with reduced mobility; the Quercus gold flag for water quality; and a ColorADD flag, which shows the beach uses a system of colour symbols for people with colour blindness.

The council explains what the accessible beach flag means in practice. It rebuilt the streets near the beach to remove barriers, lowered the kerbs and extended the boardwalks out across the sand, and there is an amphibious chair to carry people with limited mobility into the water. Those boardwalks make Tocha easier than most beaches with a buggy, as long as you’re happy to carry it for the last bit onto soft sand.

The APA lists a first-aid post, toilets, showers, beach bars and support services, and parking.

Dogs are not allowed on the supervised beach in the bathing season, except certified assistance dogs, under the maritime authority’s standard beach rules.

Tocha has a long history of arte xávega, the traditional beach-seine fishing of this coast. The council’s history of the village describes how, not many years ago, a conch horn was blown at about seven in the morning to call each crew of six or seven men. The boat was rolled down to the water on wooden rollers and rowed two or three miles out, and back on land the skipper directed the crew as they hauled the net in by hand. Holidaymakers often joined in the pulling. The catch was sorted and auctioned on the beach, and fish was grilled and potatoes roasted in the sand while the fishermen told stories.

Methods have changed since then, but the council says the fishing is still one of the village’s main attractions, and boats and nets are often spread out on the sand while the crews wait for the sea to settle. As with any working beach, keep children back from ropes, boats and vehicles during a haul.

From June to September the council’s Animação de Verão summer programme brings exhibitions, craft fairs, outdoor concerts and cinema to the seafront. The residents’ association publishes the programme on its website each year.

Inland in the same municipality, the lake beaches of Olhos da Fervença, Sete Fontes and Ançã all had lifeguards and Blue Flags in 2026, according to the Bandeira Azul list and the APA. They’re a calmer option on windy days. North along the coast, Praia de Mira has a floating pool on its lagoon and daily fishing hauls in season. Coimbra is a short drive inland, with the Portugal dos Pequenitos miniature village and the Science Museum.

When the sea is too rough, the indoor Piscinas Municipais de Cantanhede in the town have a learner pool and public swimming seven days a week.

Is Praia da Tocha good for toddlers?
