Praia do Baleal (Baleal Sul)

Baleal is a small seaside spot just outside Peniche, on the stretch of coast that Peniche council markets as the “Capital da Onda” (wave capital). The Portuguese Environment Agency (APA) monitors three bathing beaches here: Baleal Sul, Baleal Norte and Baleal Campismo, next to the campsite.

For families, the difference between the first two matters most. The APA says what sets Baleal Sul apart from Baleal Norte is its calmer sea, and that the waves on the south side aren’t surfers’ first choice. Baleal Norte, it says, is well known among surfers for its rough sea. So the usual plan is simple: swim and paddle on Baleal Sul, and walk round to Baleal Norte to watch the surfers.

VisitPortugal describes Praia do Baleal as a long stretch of sand washed by calm water, good for practising and learning windsurfing. It lists lifeguards, showers, parking, a bar and a restaurant, and gives an average summer sea temperature of 17°C.

“Calmer” is relative on this coast. The APA still flags waves of special value and a risk of rockfall at Baleal Sul, so keep small children at the water’s edge with an adult, swim between the flags, and set up away from the rocks.

VisitPortugal also mentions tennis courts, swimming pools, a nightclub and a riding centre around Baleal, which we couldn’t check individually. Ask locally if you want to use any of them.

On the northern side, the APA describes a long sandy beach with a landscape it calls very beautiful, known among surfers above all for its rough sea. It has lifeguards and a Blue Flag, but it’s a beach for confident swimmers and for watching surf, not for toddlers splashing about. The APA also flags rockfall risk here.

Peniche’s 2026 bathing season ran from 1 June to 15 September, longer than many beaches nearby. Baleal Sul and Baleal Norte both flew the Blue Flag in 2026. The APA rates the water at both “excellent”, with the last analysis of the season, on 25 August 2026, rated suitable. Its profiles find no significant sources of pollution near either beach, and there were no days of bathing advised against in 2025.

Baleal Sul is one of two Peniche beaches in the Praia Acessível (Accessible Beach) programme, along with Medão-Supertubos, according to Peniche council. The APA lists an amphibious chair. The council publishes a plan showing the accessible parking and its distance to the sand. Baleal Norte isn’t listed as accessible.

In summer 2026, from 25 July to 31 August, Peniche council paid for more frequent buses to Baleal and Supertubos, run by Rodoviária do Oeste. They were free for holders of the Passe M (for residents, students and workers in the municipality); everyone else paid the normal fare. The council also added a daily service linking Peniche with Óbidos and Caldas da Rainha that summer. Check Rodoviária do Oeste’s timetables for the current year.

Baleal is busy in summer, with surf schools, campers and day visitors. There’s no natural shade on the sand. The water is cold. Baleal Norte and the rocks around both beaches aren’t for small children.

From Peniche harbour, boats cross to Berlenga island in season, with a sea fort, seabirds and clear water. Skaters can try the Boa Sombra skatepark in Peniche, and on a grey day there’s the Peniche municipal pool. Inland, the walled town of Óbidos is on the summer bus route.

Which Baleal beach is best for children?

Baleal Sul. The APA says its sea is calmer than Baleal Norte’s, and it’s the accessible one, with an amphibious chair.
