Praia do Bom Sucesso (Lagoa de Óbidos)

Praia do Bom Sucesso is the lagoon beach on the Óbidos side of the Lagoa de Óbidos. Óbidos council describes a long stretch of sand along the lagoon shore, running all the way to where the lagoon opens to the sea. It faces Foz do Arelho across the water, separated from it by several sand islands (mouchões) as well as the lagoon itself. The council notes that it’s very busy, above all with families with children.

The Portuguese Environment Agency (APA) says the beach lies at the start of the lagoon’s right bank, on the south side, with a huge area of sand washed by clear, calm water. It also mentions a volleyball area and a mobile library, and says windsurfers like it.

The Lagoa de Óbidos is, according to Óbidos council, the largest coastal lagoon on the Portuguese coast, about 6.9 square kilometres. It’s shallow, averaging about two metres deep, and its western arm is called the Braço do Bom Sucesso. The lagoon joins the ocean through a tidal inlet that is kept open artificially, so the water here rises and falls with the tides but isn’t hit by Atlantic swell.

The council also highlights the lagoon’s value for birds, including migrating species passing through, so binoculars earn their place in the beach bag.

That’s why the APA doesn’t flag waves or rockfall here, and why families with small children come. Children can wade, dig and float without being knocked over.

The water is calm and lifeguarded in season, but a few rules still apply:

• stay near the lifeguarded area and keep toddlers within arm’s reach
• keep away from the channel where the lagoon meets the sea, where the tide runs fastest
• watch out for windsurfers and other boards on windy afternoons

Bom Sucesso flew the Blue Flag in 2026, with a bathing season from 13 June to 13 September. The APA rates the water “excellent”, and the last analysis of the season, on 28 August 2026, was rated suitable. Its profile says any contamination would come from the lagoon, that the risk is very low given the water’s history, and that there were no days of bathing advised against in 2025.

Parking is the easy part. The council says there are two car parks, one tarmac and one gravel, with room for hundreds of cars.

The APA lists toilets, showers, a first-aid post, rubbish collection and beach cleaning, and it lists the beach as accessible with an amphibious chair. It doesn’t list a beach bar or restaurant in its facilities data for 2026, so bring a picnic, water and snacks unless you’ve checked what’s open.

Near the beach there’s a viewpoint with a wide view over the lagoon and Foz do Arelho. The council says it’s reached on a dirt track, so it isn’t one for buggies.

The APA says the beach is popular with windsurfers, and flat, shallow water is what beginners need. If you have an older child keen to try, ask locally in advance about lessons; we didn’t find an official list of schools operating here.

There’s no natural shade on the open sand. Facilities are simpler than at Foz do Arelho across the water, and we couldn’t confirm a café on the beach. Being so popular with families, it fills on summer weekends, despite the big car parks.

Across the lagoon, Foz do Arelho has calm lagoon bathing too, plus a sea beach, restaurants and a beach library. Inland, the walled town of Óbidos has a castle, a complete ring of walls and bookshops in unexpected places, and the Óbidos municipal pools are there for a cooler day. If older children want waves, Praia do Rei do Cortiço, a sea beach in the same municipality, also flew the Blue Flag in 2026.

Is Praia do Bom Sucesso good for toddlers?

Yes. The APA describes clear, calm lagoon water, and the council says it’s especially popular with families with children. Keep away from the channel to the sea.
