Praia Fluvial de Constância

Constância is a small riverside town in the Ribatejo, built where the Zêzere flows into the Tagus. Its river beach, the Praia Fluvial de Constância, sits on the left bank of the Zêzere. The council describes the setting as the place where the Zêzere embraces the Tagus.

It’s a small, sandy beach close to the town, so it’s easy to combine a swim with lunch in a café and a walk through the streets. Unlike the mountain river beaches further north, there’s no winding road to get here.

Constância council says the beach has about 3,500 m² of sand, with room for up to 350 people. For toddlers who want to dig, that sand matters, since several of the region’s river beaches are mostly grass or rock.

The council lists showers, foot showers and a pergola for shade on the beach itself. Close by there’s parking, green areas, a picnic park, cafés and restaurants, toilets and a campsite. The APA’s 2026 data also lists a first-aid post and a beach bar.

The council says the water is known for its quality, and the APA (Portuguese Environment Agency) classes it as Excellent.

The official 2026 bathing season at Constância ran from 6 June to 6 September, longer than most river beaches in the region. The council says the beach meets the requirements for bathing-water quality and lifeguard cover, and it was on the official list of lifeguarded beaches for 2026.

This is open river water, not a pool. Keep young children in the shallows and within reach, and swim only when the lifeguard is on duty.

Every summer the council runs Animação na Praia, a programme of events at the beach. The August 2026 programme included:

• the Festa dos Rios (Rivers Festival) on Saturday 8 August, from 08:30 to 19:00, with activities for children and adults, fado, folk dancing, boat trips, a guided walk, crafts, books, food and performances, plus inflatables and balloon modelling from 16:00
• free boat trips called Navegar no Borda Rio on several mornings in August, for up to six people at a time, booked in advance through the town’s Museu dos Rios (river museum) on 249 730 053 or museu.rios@cm-constancia.pt
• a Kayak Trail race through the town, the rivers and the trails on 30 August

The dates change each year, so check the council’s website for next summer’s programme. A free boat trip on the river where two rivers meet is a lovely thing to book for children.

The beach is by the town, with parking nearby, according to the council. Constância is in the Médio Tejo, a short drive from Abrantes and Entroncamento.

• It’s small, with space for 350 people, so it fills on hot weekends.
• It’s a big river rather than a sheltered pool, so it suits paddling toddlers and confident swimmers better than wobbly beginners.
• The APA doesn’t list it as an accessible beach, so wheelchair users should check access with the council.

The Borboletário Tropical de Constância is in the same town, with tropical butterflies flying free in a warm glasshouse, and makes a good pairing with a morning swim. In nearby Entroncamento, the Museu Nacional Ferroviário is a big draw for train fans. Up the Zêzere, Aldeia do Mato has a floating pool on the Castelo de Bode reservoir.
