Praia Fluvial do Carvoeiro

The Praia Fluvial do Carvoeiro is in the north of the municipality of Mação, between the hamlet of Aldeia da Capela and the village of Carvoeiro. The APA (Portuguese Environment Agency) puts it about 25 minutes from Mação town. It sits in a large, dense pine wood, and the regional news site Médio Tejo describes it as isolated from any source of pollution.

In June 2026 Carvoeiro raised the Blue Flag (Bandeira Azul) for the 20th year in a row, every year since 2007. Médio Tejo says no other river beach in the Médio Tejo region has matched that. It also flies the Praia Acessível (accessible beach) flag.

A retaining wall across the stream holds the water back into a long, clear bathing area. Next to it is a separate pool just for younger children, which Médio Tejo describes as an independent pool dedicated to the little ones. The Aldeias do Xisto network also lists a children’s pool.

That separate pool is the main reason to pick Carvoeiro with toddlers. They get their own space, away from the bigger children in the main pool, and parents can sit close by. Stay with them in the water all the same.

The APA classes the water as Excellent. Its profile notes that pollution could come from occasional accidents in local sewer networks, and says a warning would be posted on site if that happened.

The official bathing season in Mação ran from 13 June to 13 September 2026, one of the longest in the region, and Carvoeiro had lifeguards throughout. There’s also a first-aid post.

The winter of 2025 to 2026 hit Carvoeiro hard. According to Médio Tejo, storm Kristin and the stream in flood damaged roofs on the facilities, broke fences and uprooted dozens of trees. Mação council ran a clean-up and rebuilding operation, and the beach reopened in full for the start of the season on 13 June. Jornal Alto Alentejo reports that the works changed the entrance, with a small wooden gateway and a new garden area, so the beach may look a little different from older photos, and there may be fewer big trees in places.

Médio Tejo lists modern changing rooms, a bar with a terrace, a wooded picnic park and public barbecues. The beach also has street lighting, so the bar can stay open and families can stay on after dark. On a hot evening that’s a real bonus: a swim after the heat of the day, then dinner at the picnic tables.

The APA’s 2026 data also lists toilets, showers, a first-aid post and parking.

Carvoeiro is a Praia Acessível. Médio Tejo mentions ramps, access routes and facilities fully adapted for people with reduced mobility, and Mação council says there’s an amphibious chair, a floating wheelchair for getting into the water.

Aldeias do Xisto’s directions are to head from Mação towards Caratão, then carry on to Carvoeiro. The beach is just over 1 km along a dirt road north-east of the village. Drive slowly on the dirt section. There’s parking at the beach, and we couldn’t find public transport to recommend.

• It’s a small, quiet place, so older children looking for water sports or slides will find more at Malhadal.

Mação council says the municipality has three bathing spots. Cardigos holds the Quercus Gold Quality award for water quality, and the Albufeira de Ortiga, on the Belver reservoir on the Tagus, sits next to a campsite. All three have a bar, according to Jornal Alto Alentejo, and all had the same 13 June to 13 September season in 2026.

Malhadal in Proença-a-Nova has an inflatable water park, and Aldeia do Mato in Abrantes has a floating pool and boats on the Castelo de Bode reservoir. In Constância, where the Zêzere meets the Tagus, the tropical butterfly house is a good stop on the way home.
