Praia Fluvial do Penedo Furado

The Praia Fluvial do Penedo Furado sits on the Ribeira do Codes in Vila de Rei, in the pine-covered hills above the Castelo de Bode reservoir. Vila de Rei council calls it one of the places most visited by tourists in the municipality, and the Aldeias do Xisto network, which promotes this corner of central Portugal, says it’s the most popular bathing spot in the area.

The name means “holed rock”. High above the beach is a huge boulder with a funnel-shaped hole through it, and the viewpoint built there gives the place its name. Down at the water, the stream runs slowly through a natural passage in the rock into the bathing area.

For children, this beach combines a swim with a proper small adventure: a boardwalk trail, waterfalls, a viewpoint and a fossil that is far older than any dinosaur.

Aldeias do Xisto describes the water as clear and says the beach suits family outings because it isn’t deep. It also mentions a children’s bathing area. That makes it one of the better river beaches in the region for toddlers and early swimmers, although small children still need an adult beside them.

The APA (Portuguese Environment Agency) classes the water as Excellent. Any warning during the season is posted on site and on the APA’s InfoÁgua website.

The official beach notice for 2026, signed in May, sets out the rules. The bathing season ran from 15 June to 15 September 2026, with two lifeguards on duty every day from 11:00 to 19:00 and a lunch break from 13:00 to 13:30. The first-aid post keeps the same hours. The bathing frontage is about 100 metres long.

The notice also explains the flags: green means you can swim, yellow means take care and no swimming, red means don’t go in the water, and a chequered flag means the beach is temporarily without a lifeguard. Ball games are only allowed in marked areas, and boats and pedal boats can’t use the bathing zone.

The boardwalks are the reason many families come. Vila de Rei council describes a circular route of about 2 km that follows the Ribeira do Codes and suits adults and children, and it recommends starting at the beach. Along the way there are waterfalls, viewpoints and a fossil. Aldeias do Xisto mentions a narrow path cut into the rock with small waterfalls visible a few metres away.

At the top is the Miradouro do Penedo Furado, the viewpoint at the holed rock. From there you can see pine-covered hills, the Ribeira do Codes, the Castelo de Bode reservoir and a few houses in the villages around. Nearby is a second viewpoint, the Miradouro das Fragas do Rabadão, with a small shrine and a path that links back down.

Two kilometres is manageable for most primary-age children. With toddlers, a sling or carrier is more practical than a buggy on a trail that climbs to viewpoints.

Below the viewpoint, on the right bank of the stream, is a rock known locally as the Bicha Pintada (roughly “painted snake”). The council explains that the grooves on it are thought to be tracks made by trilobites feeding and moving across a sandy seabed. Some experts date the rock at more than 480 million years old.

Trilobites were sea creatures with segmented shells, a bit like woodlice, and they died out long before the first dinosaurs appeared. Finding their trails on a hillside in the middle of Portugal is a great way to start a conversation about how the land has changed.

The council’s service map for the beach shows a bar and café, two playgrounds, several picnic areas, drinking water points, toilets and showers, shaded areas, parking and a lifeguard post. Aldeias do Xisto adds sunshade and sun-lounger hire and a grassy area. Dogs aren’t allowed in the bathing area.

For wheelchair users, the same map marks an accessible entrance, accessible toilets and showers, accessible parking spaces and an amphibious chair. The boardwalk trail itself is a different matter, so check with the council before planning it with a wheelchair.

This is the busiest beach in the municipality, so summer weekends fill up. The boardwalk loop has climbs to the viewpoints, which small legs may find hard in the midday heat. Go early, or walk in the late afternoon once the sun has dropped.

Vila de Rei has another quiet, family-friendly river beach at Bostelim, which also flies the Blue Flag. In the next municipality, the Praia Fluvial da Ribeira Grande sits in the middle of Sertã beside the town pool. Heading south towards the Tagus, Aldeia do Mato is a reservoir beach on Castelo de Bode itself. If your children loved the trilobite tracks, the Museu das Trilobites in Arouca has giant trilobite fossils.
