Praia Fluvial da Ribeira Grande

Most river beaches in the Beira Baixa hills are at the end of a winding road. The Praia Fluvial da Ribeira Grande is the opposite: it’s in the centre of Sertã, on the Ribeira da Sertã (also called the Ribeira Grande), next to the town’s outdoor municipal pool and a large picnic park. Sertã council points out that you can walk from the beach straight into the old streets of the town.

The APA (Portuguese Environment Agency) describes it as part of a big leisure and sports area. For families, that means you can swim, eat and let children play without getting back in the car, and there’s a proper pool next door if the river doesn’t appeal.

In 2026 the beach flew the Blue Flag (Bandeira Azul) and held the Praia Acessível (accessible beach) flag, according to the council and the ABAAE, which runs the Blue Flag in Portugal.

The official 2026 bathing season at Ribeira Grande ran from 15 June to 15 September, one of the longer seasons in the region. Sertã council gives the lifeguard hours as 10:00 to 13:00 and 14:00 to 18:00, so there’s a gap at lunchtime, which is worth knowing if you usually swim then. There’s also a first-aid post.

The council and the Aldeias do Xisto network, which promotes this part of central Portugal, list:

• shade under the trees and a sitting-out area with shelter from the sun
• a bar with a terrace
• a picnic park with a barbecue
• a children’s play area and a paddling area (the Aldeias do Xisto page calls it “parque e praia infantil”)
• adapted toilets, changing rooms and showers
• bike parking and a car park with reserved spaces for disabled drivers

The council describes pedestrian access as easy, and the whole area is in town, so it’s one of the more practical river beaches to reach with a buggy.

Ribeira Grande is a Praia Acessível. Sertã council lists easy pedestrian access, reserved parking, adapted toilets and an amphibious chair with help to get into the water. The amphibious chair is a floating wheelchair that lets people with reduced mobility bathe safely.

The APA hasn’t yet given Ribeira Grande a classification, because it is a relatively new bathing water. Its 2026 profile says short-term pollution events can happen here and that the source is thought to be faults in the sewer network or unlicensed discharges, although the causes aren’t fully known.

That happened in 2026. On 13 August the regional health authority temporarily closed the beach to bathing after routine APA tests found irregular microbiological results. New samples taken the same day showed the water returning to normal, and bathing reopened on 14 August. During the closure the council said the bar, changing rooms, lawns and the municipal pool all stayed open.

Before a swim, check the notice board on site or the APA’s InfoÁgua website for the latest result. If bathing is advised against, the pool next door is the easy fallback.

The Piscina Municipal da Sertã is on Rua da Piscina, right beside the river beach. In 2026 it opened every day from 15 June to 15 September, 10:00 to 20:00, with lifeguards throughout those hours, easy access, adapted toilets, a first-aid post, a bar, shade, and umbrella and sun-lounger hire. For toddlers and children who don’t like cold river water, this can be the main event, with the river as a place to paddle and look for fish.

Aldeias do Xisto gives two routes: from the south, take the A23 towards Castelo Branco and leave for the EN2 towards Sertã; from Coimbra, take the IC3 towards Tomar, then the IC8 towards Castelo Branco and Sertã. There’s parking by the beach.

• The August 2026 closure shows the water can have problems, and the APA’s profile warns it may happen again.
• The lifeguard takes a lunch break from 13:00 to 14:00.
• A town beach doesn’t have the wild mountain feel of places like Penedo Furado in neighbouring Vila de Rei.

Sertã has a second lifeguarded river beach at Troviscal, which the council describes as calm, with a caravan park and the accessible-beach flag. For a wilder swim, Penedo Furado has waterfalls and a viewpoint, and Bostelim is a quiet, family-friendly spot, both in Vila de Rei. The council also points to the Centro Náutico do Zêzere at Trízio, on the Castelo de Bode reservoir, for canoeing, water skiing, wakeboarding and boat hire.

Sertã has a second lifeguarded river beach at Troviscal, in the same council. In 2026 its bathing season also ran from 15 June to 15 September. The environment agency’s page lists it as an accessible beach with an amphibious chair, and shows lifeguards, a first-aid post, toilets, showers, a beach bar and parking. Its water was classed “good” (two stars) rather than “excellent”, so it is worth checking the latest result on the agency’s page before a swim.
