Praia Fluvial do Reconquinho

Penacova is a small town on a hilltop above the River Mondego, north-east of Coimbra, where the river winds through steep, wooded hills. The Praia Fluvial do Reconquinho is on the left bank, opposite the town, and the regional tourism board calls it one of the most beautiful river beaches in the country. You can drive down, or walk about 1.5 km down the hill from the town. A wooden footbridge links the beach with the other bank.

Local press describe it as one of the most visited river beaches in the Coimbra region in summer.

River water has no surf, so small children can paddle at the edge without being knocked over, and families come here precisely for that. The Mondego is still a real river, though, and a river can have current in the main channel and sudden changes in depth. Keep toddlers within arm’s reach, and let older children swim only where the lifeguards can see them.

The regional tourism board notes that the wooden footbridge is popular with bathers for jumping into the river. In August 2026 the Portuguese spinal surgery society launched a national campaign warning that about 100 people a year in Portugal suffer spinal injuries from badly judged dives, mostly into unfamiliar or shallow water. If your older children want to jump, check the depth with the lifeguards first and make sure they go in feet first.

The Agência Portuguesa do Ambiente (APA) classifies the water as Excellent. In 2026 the bathing season, with lifeguards, ran from 13 June to 13 September, longer than at many inland river beaches.

The winter of 2025 to 2026 brought floods and storms along the Mondego and the Alva. Penacova council had to rebuild beach support buildings, repair the paths down to the water and put back the sand before the season. On 25 June 2026 the Reconquinho raised its Blue Flag again, together with the Quercus gold flag for water quality.

A short scare followed in July. A lorry spilled a large amount of resin on the IP3 road above the valley, and the APA advised against bathing at Reconquinho, and at Rebolim and Palheiros e Zorro downstream in Coimbra, while the river was tested. The resin wasn’t toxic, the tests found no pollution, and bathing was allowed again the next day. It’s a reminder to check the signs at the entrance before you swim.

The regional tourism board lists a bar, beach support services, a boat shelter, a sports pitch, a picnic area and a fluvioteca (a small riverside library), and there’s a campsite nearby. The APA also lists toilets, a first-aid post and parking, and records the beach as accessible with an amphibious chair.

In summer 2026 the municipal library put old fridges on the Reconquinho, Vimieiro and Cornicovo river beaches, converted into free little libraries full of novels, children’s and teenage books, stories and travel books. You take a book, read it on the beach and put it back. The council’s Penacova Verão summer programme also brings environmental education, story hours and family activities to the river beaches.

Penacova has three official river beaches. Vimieiro, on the River Alva near São Pedro de Alva, also flew a Blue Flag in 2026 and was voted River Beach of the Year by the public in the Guia das Praias Fluviais poll in 2023, just ahead of the Reconquinho. Cornicovo, also on the Alva, is quieter and opened a new beach bar in 2026, but doesn’t have a Blue Flag.

Coimbra is close by, with the Portugal dos Pequenitos miniature village, the Science Museum and the riverside Parque Verde do Mondego. Upstream in the hills, the Praia Fluvial da Peneda in Góis has a lawn and a sand island in the River Ceira.

Is the Reconquinho good for toddlers?
