Praia Fluvial da Quinta do Barco

Sever do Vouga is a green, hilly municipality in the east of Aveiro district, famous for blueberries and waterfalls. Its main river beach, the Praia Fluvial da Quinta do Barco, is on the left bank of the River Vouga near the village of Paradela do Vouga. The council describes it as sitting in an open valley full of light and greenery, and it’s been a bathing beach for more than 20 years.

The water is held back by the Grela weir (açude), which makes a wide, calm stretch of river for swimming. The council says the weir marks the start of a protected Natura 2000 site, the Rio Vouga, which covers more than 2,769 hectares and reaches as far as Segadães in Águeda.

Families come here for calm river water. The tourism office says the sand is renewed every year, and the beach sits inside a large leisure and picnic park with inviting shade, which is a real advantage on hot inland afternoons. Toddlers can dig and paddle at the edge, and there’s space on the grass for naps and ball games.

As at any river beach, stay close to young children. Depth can change, and water near a weir can flow faster than it looks. The APA’s 2026 data lists lifeguards, a first-aid post, toilets, showers, beach support services and parking.

The tourism office also mentions a floating pool on the water. It hasn’t been installed every year, though: the council’s own page for the 2023 season said the floating pool wasn’t put in and the bar and terrace didn’t open that summer. If the floating pool is the main draw for your children, check with the council first.

River beaches have short seasons. In 2026 Quinta do Barco’s Blue Flag season ran from 27 June to 6 September, and the APA lists the bathing season, when lifeguards are on duty, as 1 July to 6 September.

In 2026 the beach won three awards again: the Blue Flag, which the council says it has held since 2011; the accessible beach award (Praia Acessível), held since 2006; and the Quercus gold award for water quality. The APA classifies the water as Excellent.

The council lists ramps for people with reduced mobility, two reserved parking spaces, a picnic park, showers, public toilets, a public drinking water tap, a first-aid post and a car park. The APA also records an amphibious chair for getting wheelchair users into the water. The ramps and grassy park make it a comfortable beach with a buggy.

The tourism office mentions a bar with a terrace. Across the river there’s a restaurant with the same name as the beach, Quinta do Barco.

This is a beach for active families as much as for lazy ones. According to the council, you can hire a canoe to paddle along the riverbed, and the tourism office adds that outdoor and adventure activities can be arranged on request.

The council suggests two ways to explore on foot. The Trilho dos Moinhos (Mills Trail) is a 7.7 km circular walk from the village of Soutelo down to the Vouga, too long for small legs but good for older children. For an easier outing, the old railway line just a few metres from the beach has been turned into an ecopista, a walking and cycling path. Children who like trains will enjoy knowing they’re riding along an old railway line, and it’s a good place to bring scooters and bikes.

Sever do Vouga also has the Cascata da Cabreia, a waterfall with a pool at the bottom, which the tourism office lists as its second river bathing spot. Towards Aveiro, Águeda Bike Park is a good next stop for bike-mad children, and the Núcleo Museológico de Macinhata do Vouga is a small railway museum on the same Vouga line. For a lagoon beach closer to the coast, try Praia do Bico in Murtosa.
