Boardriders Quiksilver Skatepark, Ericeira

Ericeira is a surf town, and its best-known skate park sits right beside the Boardriders Quiksilver flagship store on the Largo de São Sebastião, a few minutes’ walk from the old village centre on the road towards Ribeira d’Ilhas. Surf shop, café terrace and skate park share one site, with the Atlantic in view.

The park opened in 2011. It was designed and built by ZUT Skateparks, with Hall04 credited as designer, and Quiksilver paid for it as part of the Boardriders complex. At about 1,200 square metres of concrete it’s one of the larger parks on this stretch of coast. In 2021 the local magazine Azul Ericeira Mag reported that it had been picked out in a national round-up of Portugal’s best skate parks, and described it as having areas for skaters of every level.

The skatepark directory Trucks and Fins describes two main parts:

• A street section with banks, ledges, manual pads, rails and gaps. This is where a newer skater spends most of the time: the flat areas between obstacles are good for learning to push, turn and stop.
• A bowl with stone coping (the hard edge along the top). The bowl is the park’s best-known feature and is for confident skaters. Keep younger children out of it unless they’re with a coach.

The directory’s list of features also includes floodlights, toilets, a skate shop and a skate school on site. One visitor review there mentions some movable ramps, so the layout may change a little between visits.

Yes, with some care. This is a serious park used by strong skaters, and the bowl isn’t a place to learn. But the street area has room to practise, and the resident skate school runs classes from age 5. For a first go, booking a lesson is the easiest way in: the coach picks the quieter corners and the right obstacles, and the school says quality equipment is included.

We couldn’t find a published rule about scooters or BMX at this park. Check at the shop before letting a child ride in on a scooter. Whatever they ride, a helmet is a must, and knee and elbow pads save a lot of tears on concrete.

36 Skate School has been teaching at Boardriders Ericeira since 2016. It offers skateboard and surfskate lessons (surfskate uses a board with a loose front truck to practise surf moves on land). Its 2026 price list, checked in September 2026:

• Group skateboard class: €25 per person, or packs of 4 (€70), 8 (€110) and 10 (€130).
• Monthly group membership: €65, for pupils who come all year, subject to the instructor’s approval.
• Private skateboard class: €30, or packs of 4 (€90), 8 (€160) and 10 (€190).
• Surfskate: €30 a class, three for €80, or €50 private.

Lessons are for ages 5 and up, in small groups. The school also runs Easter and summer skate camps, with daily skate lessons, inflatables, a graffiti workshop, surfing, trips to other skate parks and lunch, and skate birthday parties. Prices for camps and parties are on request. The school doesn’t spell out camp hours or drop-off arrangements online, so ask when you book. Contact is by WhatsApp (+351 936 420 411) or email.

The Boardriders site has a bar and lounge area next to the park, and the store listed daily opening hours of 10:00 to 20:00 when checked. The magazine says the bar hosts regular events. No entry charge for the skate park was published anywhere we looked, and the Olá Onda guesthouse’s local guide describes it as open to everyone.

The council’s Parque Urbano de São Sebastião, also on the Largo de São Sebastião, has gardens, a playground and a café, which is handy when one child skates and another doesn’t.

It’s an open concrete park, so bring water and sun cream in summer. Evening sessions are possible because the park is lit.

Mafra council runs its own skate parks, including one inside the sports park in Mafra town (the same site as the Mafra outdoor pools). Council parks follow a 2023 regulation: only skateboards, BMX freestyle bikes and inline skates are allowed, helmets and pads are compulsory, and they’re not recommended for unsupervised children under 6. Those rules are for council parks, but they’re a useful benchmark here too.

Pair a skate session with the beach and a surf lesson. Ericeira Surf Clube runs day camps with surf and skate at Ribeira d’Ilhas, and the Ericeira municipal pools are an option on a windy day. Inland, the Palácio Nacional de Mafra and the deer and wild boar of the Tapada Nacional de Mafra are a short drive inland.

Is the Ericeira skatepark free?

No entry charge was published when we checked, and local guides describe it as open to everyone. Lessons and camps are paid.

From what age can children have skate lessons in Ericeira?

36 Skate School teaches from age 5, in groups or one to one.

Is it suitable for beginners?

The street section works for beginners, especially in a lesson. The bowl is for experienced skaters.

Are there toilets and somewhere to eat?

Yes. The site has a bar and terrace, and the directory lists toilets. The neighbouring Parque Urbano de São Sebastião has a café too.

Can you skate there in the evening?

The park has floodlights. Check hours at the Boardriders store, which listed 10:00 to 20:00 daily.
