Restaurante Homem do Leme

Restaurante Homem do Leme sits on Avenida de Montevideu in Nevogilde, the northern end of Porto’s Foz district, right on Praia do Homem do Leme. The dining room is glazed on the sea side, so you get the Atlantic view on a cold, grey day too, and there is outdoor seating for warmer ones.

Next to it is a public playground with a wooden castle. Porto parenting sites Estrelas & Ouriços and Pumpkin both recommend the restaurant for exactly that: children climb the castle while the food comes, and adults can see them from the tables. Águas do Porto, the city company that runs the beaches, says the beach has two playgrounds and is popular with families for that reason.

The beach is named after the statue at its entrance: a bronze fisherman gripping a ship’s wheel (leme means helm), made by Américo Gomes in 1934 to honour Porto’s fishermen. The menu is themed on the sea, and the children’s section is called “Pequenos marinheiros” (little sailors). When we checked the menu on TheFork (updated in June 2026), it had two children’s dishes, one of them steak with rice and chips, which suits most fussy eaters.

The snack section, “Shark bite”, is useful with children who only want something small:

• toast (€3) or a ham and cheese toastie, tosta mista (€5)
• a hot dog (€9.90) or a burger in bolo do caco, the Madeiran flatbread (€14)
• soup of the day (€3.50)

For pudding there are pancakes (€7), chocolate mousse (€6.50) and single scoops of ice cream in strawberry, chocolate, vanilla, cream or lemon (€3.50). Drinks children like include fresh orange juice and lemonade (€4 each), milk with Nesquik (€2.50) and hot chocolate (€3.50).

Adults get salads, bowls, grilled sea bass and bream, clams, prawns and steaks. The menu marks vegetarian dishes, including a vegan bowl, a veggie burger and vegetable tempura. TheFork puts the average spend at about €19 a head.

Time Out and Visit Porto both list the restaurant as opening at 9am every day, so it works for a late breakfast after an early beach walk. Their closing times differ, which is normal for a beach restaurant whose hours move with the season, so check before a special trip.

Sunny weekend lunchtimes are the busiest time on this stretch of seafront, and the playground fills up with them. You can book through TheFork or by phoning the restaurant. The seafront catches the Atlantic wind, so pack a jumper even in summer; the indoor room is the better bet out of season.

The playground is public and sits outside the restaurant, so staff do not watch it. Sit where you can see the castle, or take turns.

The Foz promenade is flat and continuous, which makes it easy with a buggy or a scooter. STCP buses 1M and 500 run along the seafront, according to Águas do Porto.

Walk south along the promenade to Praia do Carneiro and the mouth of the Douro, or north to the Parque da Cidade, Porto’s biggest park. The SEA LIFE Porto aquarium is on the same seafront if the weather turns. Further north in Leça da Palmeira, the Piscina das Marés has a sheltered saltwater pool for children in summer.
