Railroad Caffe

Railroad Caffe is a café run like a model railway. Small freight trains run on tracks through the room, and each table works as a station: drinks, napkins and snacks ride over in the wagons, stop in front of you and then head back to the counter. The café’s own description calls it a place for families who love trains serving at the table.

There are two circuits. A reel the café posted in September 2026 follows the smaller inner line, which calls at tables one to six and then returns through a tunnel to the counter. The bottles and glasses travel in little crates that the café calls seatbelts: they stop anything toppling off on the bends, at the points and when the train brakes. A child who likes to know how things work can watch the whole loop from their seat.

The locomotives that started it all have been kept. The café began about ten years ago with one analogue circuit, a control box and two tables, and those first engines are now on display in the room.

Larger plates don’t fit in the wagons, so staff carry those over by hand. NiT’s opening report in 2017 noted that the founders, Ana Lucas and Ana Miranda, had been nursery teachers before opening the café. The idea came from a train restaurant Ana Miranda saw in Prague, and they built it for families from the start. They told NiT that children go wild when they arrive, and that parents often end up asking the most questions about the trains.

Railroad Caffe closed for a long spell and reopened on Wednesday 5 August 2026 in a new unit: Passeio Neptuno, Loja 25, at the Parque das Nações marina. The old address on Passeio Adamastor, which older guides and the café’s old menu page still show, is out of date.

The new room has a play area for younger children, which the café describes as a space for the little ones to explore, create and play. That makes it easier with a toddler who can’t sit and watch trains for long.

The café hasn’t published its current menu online; it posts it on Instagram. In August 2026 it was showing snacks with strawberries and sweet treats delivered by train, so think of it as a place for a drink and a snack rather than a full meal.

The only detailed menu we could find is NiT’s from the 2017 opening, with toasties, burgers, nachos, sharing boards and ice cream with toppings at the time. Treat that as a guide to the style, and check what is on offer now before you promise a child a burger.

Opening hours changed after the move. From the timetable the café posted on 14 August 2026, it opens Wednesday to Sunday from 12:00 to 22:00 and is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. The café’s own website was showing only a maintenance page when checked, so Instagram is the place for current news.

The marina is in Parque das Nações, where Oriente station (metro, trains and buses) is the main transport hub; check the walk from there to the marina on a map before you set off with a buggy. The area has plenty for a whole day out: the Oceanário, the Pavilhão do Conhecimento science centre and the riverside Telecabine cable car.

At Passeio Neptuno, Loja 25, Marina Parque das Nações, since 5 August 2026. It used to be on Passeio Adamastor, in the Edifício Nau.

Is it open on Mondays?

No. It closes on Mondays and Tuesdays and opens Wednesday to Sunday, 12:00 to 22:00, according to its August 2026 timetable.

Do you need to book?

The café recommends it, especially at weekends. Book by Instagram message or phone.

Is it good for toddlers?

Yes, for short visits. Toddlers get the trains going past at eye level and a play area when they have had enough of sitting down.
