Restaurante 1147

Restaurante 1147 is inside Castelo de São Jorge, the Moorish castle on the highest hill in Lisbon’s old centre. 1147 is the year Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal, took Lisbon. You can only reach it with a castle ticket, so lunch comes as part of a castle day: climbing towers, walking the walls and looking down over the city.

NiT, which wrote about it in June 2026, calls it one of Lisbon’s best-kept secrets. The restaurant has two outdoor areas, one next to the castle walls and another along the main building, with room for about 50 people, and NiT describes the view over the rooftops as one of the most impressive in the city. Inside there are Portuguese azulejo tiles and plates made for the restaurant by Vista Alegre, the porcelain factory.

For a child, the draw is simple: they get to eat in a castle, then go back out to the towers.

This is a traditional Portuguese restaurant, not a children’s café, and the prices reflect the setting. NiT puts a meal at about €30 to €50 a head. We found no children’s menu, so plan on sharing or ordering starters.

The dishes that work best for children, from NiT’s June 2026 list, are the small plates. Pastéis de bacalhau, crisp salt-cod fritters, cost €8. Peixinhos da horta, green beans fried in batter, are €7.50. A pastel de nata, the custard tart, is €3.50. The bigger plates include octopus “à lagareiro” roasted with olive oil (€26, the best seller), salt cod the same way (€24), clams in garlic and coriander (€21), and a T-bone steak for €62.

You need a castle ticket to get to the restaurant. When checked in September 2026, tickets cost €17 for adults and €8.50 for young people aged 13 to 25, and children up to 12 went in free. That makes it a reasonable day for a family with younger children, even if the meal is a treat.

NiT gives the restaurant’s hours as 09:00 to 20:30 every day. The castle itself is open 09:00 to 21:00 from March to October (last entry 20:30) and 09:00 to 18:00 from November to February (last entry 17:30). In winter, check how late the restaurant serves. The castle closes on 1 January, 1 May and 24, 25 and 31 December.

The castle is at the top of a steep hill. Bus 737 stops at Chão da Feira, about two minutes’ walk away, and tram 28E stops about five minutes away. Two public lifts, the Castelo lift and the Chão do Loureiro car park lift, cut out some of the climb from Baixa. Inside, there is a smooth accessible route from the turnstiles to the eastern viewpoint, a wheelchair-adapted toilet, and baby changing in the toilets. Much of the rest of the castle is uneven, with steps on the walls and towers.

The castle also has a camera obscura (periscope) that projects live views of the city on guided sessions, depending on the weather. The Santa Luzia lift is one of the easier ways down afterwards, and the Museu da Marioneta (puppets) is nearby for a rainy afternoon.

Can you eat at Restaurante 1147 without a castle ticket?

No. According to NiT, a castle entry ticket is required to reach the restaurant. Children up to 12 get into the castle free.

Is there a kids’ menu?

None is listed. Salt-cod fritters, fried green beans and a custard tart are the child-friendly choices on the menu NiT published.

How do we get up to the castle with a buggy?

Take bus 737 to the Castelo stop, which is about two minutes on foot, or use the Castelo lift from Baixa. Inside, the smooth route runs from the entrance to the eastern viewpoint, but towers and walls have steps.

Is it worth it with small children?

If you are visiting the castle anyway, it saves going back down the hill for lunch. Ask for a terrace table in good weather and share starters to keep the cost down.
