Ginásio Clube Vilacondense (archery)

Ginásio Clube Vilacondense (GCV) is a community sports club in Vila do Conde, on the coast north of Porto. A group of young people founded it in 1963, and it has held public-utility status since 1984. Today it runs tennis, gymnastics, karate, volleyball, draughts and archery.

Archery (tiro com arco in Portuguese) is open to all ages. The club says it is one of the oldest arts people practise, as old as human history, and today it’s an Olympic sport with thousands of archers worldwide.

GCV lists what the sport develops: concentration, confidence, self-esteem and self-control, coordination and balance, and strength and endurance. For many children the draw is simpler. You pull back a real bow, let go, and see exactly where the arrow lands. Progress is visible on the target from one week to the next.

It’s a good fit for a child who enjoys focusing on one thing, and for children who find team games noisy or stressful, since each archer works at their own pace. Children who like instant action may find the waiting and the safety routine slow at first.

The club trains archers in the official age classes set by the Portuguese archery federation (FPTA):

• Flechas (“arrows”): under 9
• Robins: 9 to 11
• Juvenis: 12 to 14
• Cadetes: 15 to 17
• Juniores: 18 to 20
• Seniores: 21 and over
• Veteranos: 50 and over, optional

The club page doesn’t give a minimum starting age. Ring and ask whether your child is old enough, especially if they’re under 8.

Training runs from Monday to Friday, in two evening slots: 18:00 to 19:30 and 19:30 to 21:00. Sessions take place at the Pavilhão de Desportos (the sports pavilion) or at Campo da Agros, and other times can be arranged with the coach, Luís Cruz.

The monthly fee depends on how many sessions your child does:

• two sessions a week: €29
• three: €34
• four: €39
• five: €44

On top of that come club membership, at €12 a year plus a €6 joining fee, and a federation registration. The non-competitive licence is €22; competitive licences cost €32 to €42 depending on age.

In Portugal, you have to belong to a club affiliated to the FPTA to practise archery. The federation warns that shooting outside that framework can fall foul of weapons law. The licence comes with sports insurance that is renewed every year in the archer’s birthday month.

Beginners usually start with club equipment, the federation says. The basic kit is a bow (recurve or compound), arrows, an arm guard, a finger tab and a quiver. Once a child is hooked, the coach helps choose a bow that suits their size and level.

Safety rules are strict. Archery only happens in designated areas with clear boundaries, and a bow is only ever drawn towards the targets. Children learn to watch for anyone near the shooting line. Expect these rules to take up a good part of the first sessions.

Vila do Conde has plenty for a family to see before an evening session. The Nau Quinhentista is a replica 16th-century ship moored on the river, and the Centro Ciência Viva de Vila do Conde has hands-on science. Families in Lisbon can find archery for 9- to 14-year-olds at Ginásio Clube Português, and teens in the Porto area who prefer swords can look at GEMAC.
